Former tradefuck here. For a decent to good wage you are almost guaranteeing:

- A bad back, bad knees, or bad elbows. They are common if you carry heavy shit, twist awkwardly, or use a hammer for decades on end. Thats all assuming you haven't also gotten injured along the way in an accident, which is also common and probable within a 40 year career.

- Hearing gets fucked for most. Unavoidable, really. You will be in 80+ db environment constantly. Hell, a weeks work in a pump house can fuck you up if you aren't on top of earplugs. Pipe bursts near you and you won't hear shit again.

- Your lungs go to shit if your around fumes all day. Welders, cleaners, deconstruction labourers, oil field workers... Look up Asthma rates around plant oil and gas facilities. Most guys from industrial scaffolding for example, don't make 70.

- Look up what H2S is while your at it. Never mind the stuff that eats you slowly. There are so many fucked up chemicals and gases coming off everything. You get gassed once you take fucking years off your life, and end it with cancer and other fucked up conditions.


And thats just your body. Nevermind if you give a shit about the environment (conservatives and liberals both did, once). Nevermind if you want to have enough energy to be a family man and be there for you wife and kids. Nevermind if you have half a brain cell and don't want to spend more of your life with the worst fucking people you have ever met more than your family. Everyone in wants out, or they've made it they're personality and they can't explain why they hate existing.

I see a overcompensating tradie in a big truck and I immediately smile. I know they are hair trigger angry, chronically miserable, they're family life is a nightmare, and they are in more debt than they can wrap their heads around. Unless you are passionate about the trade, its a waste of life.

Also spoiler alert, oilrig jobs are often 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, shifts like that. Not saying the dude probably doesn't still work his ass off, but the 100 hours a week is misleading. Sure he's probably working 12 hour days 7 days a week for a couple weeks or a month at a time, but then he's got long breaks in between. So it's probably not any or significantly more than full time 40 hrs/wk averaged over the full year.
