That’s the issue. If you trade a consumable item for another consumable item, then you’re both left with nothing once they’re used. If I trade you some food for some water, you’ll eat the food, and I’ll drink the water, tomorrow you’ll be hungry again and I’ll be thirsty but with neither of us having anything left to trade. There needs to be a finite (otherwise whats stopping anyone from making an infinite amount of it, passing it out to their friends allowing them to buy up and hoard everything) medium of exchange that is both universally accepted as valuable, but that also doesn’t degrade and can’t be consumed. Silver and gold check all of those boxes, with the added benefit of being elemental metal, no matter how you change silver or gold, melt it down, crush it, bend it, it’s still silver or gold.
