We were talking about the new Godzilla minus one movie in my (college) class today. A bunch of us had seen it. Then this one Jew in the back started complaining about it. We pressured him as to what he didn't like and he didn't like how so many people looked the same. He said it lacked diversity. The movie takes place in post-WW2 Japan so everyone is Japanese. This apparently bothered him. It made everyone uncomfortable because of how odd he was acting.
I've posted about his antics before. He's also ranted about index funds being unfair to active investors before and that passive investors "should have to earn their profits". This is a finance class mind you.
It was so unbelievably stereotypical that just typing this back sounds fake as fuck haha. I guess stereotypes exist for a reason.

Anyways, what caused the market to be so schizo this week? Up and down a percent every day is weird.

SEC filing - https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1498710/000119312522204192/d368049dex992.htm

i guess here are the price targets

JetBlue will acquire Spirit for $33.50 to up to $34.15 per share in cash, depending on the timing of closing, including 1) an accelerated prepayment of $2.50 per share in cash, payable promptly after Spirit’s stockholders approve the transaction, and 2) a ticking fee prepayment of $0.10 per share per month between January 2023 and the consummation or termination of the transaction.
-2-

In the event the transaction is consummated on or before December 2023, the transaction consideration will be $33.50 per share, increasing over time to up to $34.15 per share, in the event the transaction is consummated at the outside date in July 2024.

It's similar in the sense that an impending contract is a common story used by pumpers to sell worthless hype.
Even if a contract really comes through, a large contract doesn't mean anything in terms of valuation. What if they're locking in $4 billion of dollars of backlog at a sizeable loss just to keep the lights on? They're already burning cash, so unless the prepayments cover all cash burn plus more, the ticker will continue its slow death for years to come.

But when my first glimpse is an interview where the CEO is talking out of his ass on both sides, in some desperate attempt to instill trust in a ticker down 90% since it's overpriced SPAC merger.. Meanwhile past shareholders are going activist to shut the whole thing down. It just smells like a turd.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my unleveraged equities, it disgusted me. I craved the gains and certainty of leverage. I aspired to the purity of the 3x Bull ETF. Your kind cling to your dividends, as though they will not decay and fail you. One day the crude index you call the Shit and Piss 500 will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. I have gone 5 full days going on 6 of not having any alcohol. The alcohol is completely out of my system and on top of covid I went through the unfortunately unpleasant withdrawals from booze as well. This is the longest I have been without booze in probably 10 years. I can say for the first time in a long time that I think I finally understand people who gave up booze for good. I don't feel like I have to have it all of the time anymore. Who would have thought it would have taken covid to make me see this. It's a christmas miracle I suppose.

It's just how the discount meta evolves. Black friday was popular, so the deals became fake bullshit with a few doorbuster lures to bait in retards. Then came cyber monday, but amazon started milking that too hard with millions of "lightning deals" no one gives a fuck about. Choice paralysis. So then they expanded to the whole month, but when a sale lasts a month no one really gives a shit, there's no urgency, might as well wait for something better.
So that's where we are now.

Insurance companies are about to rugpull the entire housing market.

On Jan 1 2024, major home insurance carriers are going to be pulling out of 35+ states, underwriting criteria getting WAAAAY more strict and unless you’re preferred you’re not getting coverage. Standard and non standard people are screwed.

A person cannot buy a home without insurance. Hedge funds have no such restrictions. Probably not a coincidence.

Losing Taiwan. The US has spent a fuckton on the wrong weapon systems for a fight with China in the pacific. That little pow-wow they had in SF was the last ditch attempt to try to get China to give up.

It's funny because they've put so much planning into how they're going to encircle China to "contain" them, but they've utterly fucked up the execution. They failed to regime-change Russia, and they've failed to prepare adequate defenses to keep Taiwan, in spite of having decades to see these things coming and basically unlimited money to spend.

I've got just over 2k in my portfolio.
450 in VOO
1k spread across a bunch of e-comm stocks
300 in BTC and about 250 in GBPUSD.

I'm up 6% since I started, but my grandma broke her hip recently and I want to help pay for her physiotherapy.

if i wanted to actually make money, what would be the best move right now?

if you pay close attention to the studies that show "passive investing," which is better described as index investing in my opinion, they will show that it beats active investing in different ways depending on what they're trying to prove.
one is that the IRR of the fund is better, index vs. active. this is very easy to point out in the aggregate because there was a bubble of active investors that we are watching pop now. everyone and their mother could and still can open up a mutual fund and market it to retail.
the other is that YOU will do better using index vs. active, and this isn't the case unless you commit to lengthy investment timelines. even mediocre active investors will beat you on a 2-3 year basis if you can't sit still. in the situation where decisions and trades are foregone conclusions, you the average joe are also no better than the bubble of active investors that's slowly popping, in fact slightly worse, and you're joining the bubble boys for really no reason whatsoever except to play make-believe.
tl;dr the benefits of indexes are only reaped by the home-gamer in the exact same way that he can pick a handful of the highest quality companies and just not overpay for them too much then sit on it for 10+ years.
you might feel different today, but 10-15 years from now KO boomer won't have changed, whereas if you trade too much you have to: either the next generation of retards with too many ideas and not enough patience will be calling you an "index boomer," or, you'll be too active -- and broke.

well if you had been in CDs then you have a pile of cash that didn't take a 80% hit in the market. a "real recession" will force a lot of people to cash out and institutional money will front-run that. and then a couple months later, stocks are insanely cheap and their future is bright, at the same time. here's just one example of the kind of chart that demonstrates that phase of the cycle.
so what's to complain about, really?
personally i am not pulling everything out. i have made a few individual stock picks that i don't mind seeing the air sucked out of them. they may be recession-proof, but if they're not, i still have a third of my portfolio in cash to go overweight on them for the future, after the cycle.
