I can actually attest to that. For an American, a lot about Mexico City is recognizable. That is, the Mexican culture is already pretty established in the States, so it should look familiar. Then there's a lot of US type stuff there. I stayed in a hotel across from a Chili's in CDMX last year. Burgers and dogs are on offer from puestos just like tacos and chilaquiles. There are safer areas of the city, Polanco (boring) and Condesa and Roma Norte (much more interesting) are a good balance, with Lomas de Chapultepec at the high-end.

English fluency in the city is kind of low 2bh if you aren't in an area that caters to tourists.
