Depending on your jurisdiction, how long you held the stock, and income level, yeah. Could be taxed at normal income rates if you hold less than a year and as high as 50% if you're in a commie state like California.

I think the stock market realistically died around 2005 when you think about it. Like dead stock market theory. In relation to purchasing power and equity gains you had that small window around 2004-2007 where you could've bought and held a tech stock or top 100 SP500 stock and rode it up to the covid bubble and cashed out and enjoyed your gains. Maybe throw in 2009 bottom or 2010 very latest. Societal crash will inflate the dollar too much to actually benefit from stock as a holder, tax regulations will only get worse and won't let up until we practically have no easy transportation/internet where state/federal tax agencies can actually reach you with. Gambling trading is a real crapshoot and the rewards of doing so are shrinking, hell even big hedge funds are closing down.
