eBay must be complicit, since I started seeing that trash show up in my search results there's never been any real stretch of time those Moroccan sellers have been inactive. It's exceptionally annoying having to scroll past hundreds of their listings when I'm looking for sleeper cheapies. every single last one of their items is so obviously fake that no one with more than a few neurons will ever get scammed so they pose no real danger to actual collectors, it's the much more sophisticated forgery workshops minting stuff with transfer-dies made from genuine coins that spook me.

Study this database of fake ancient coins to see how sophisticated some of them are, I have a decent eye but would get tricked by plenty of the better forgeries. Regarding complicity, it's true they don't exactly try very hard to block fakes, presumably because they make money off them. They're responsive to complaints of fakes, but only because complaints cost them money. So as long as a counterfeiter isn't getting too many returns and cases they ignore the problem. Tons of people getting scammed. I worry about where those fakes are going. They're going to start showing up in estate sales and garage sales but without context to determine they're forgeries. At that point they're much harder to detect. It has the power to sour the public on coin and artifact collecting when good fakes flood every corner of the markets. But I suppose that's a problem the grading and guarantee companies have already dealt with somewhat. as we saw a couple threads back, they also make fake slabs. In fact you can buy empty slab holders from china that look pretty similar to the real thing to the untrained eye.

But they can't fake the grading company registry. They can copy a real number for a real slab, but that's easier to detect and warn people about. If a grading company guarantees a coin and assigns it a unique number, then 150 more coins show up with that same number on the slab, we know there's a problem and we make a note on the website that fakes of that number exist.

The downside of numbering coins for quick ID is that you build a registry of who owns which coins. Something the feds could track if they want to. I doubt the feds are tracking every single coin collector out there, just like I doubt they're tracking every stacker. But if they take an interest in the finances of a single individual, registries would make it a lot easier for them to find out what a person owns. Also a hacker could presumably gather the same data and sell it to burglars to choose targets. Though at that point the coin has been photographed and would be difficult or impossible to re-sell on the open market.

I do like frogbro and ask an actual expert if I'm in doubt. You have a great eye and vast knowledge. I'm the top expert in the world on the couple hundred coins I collect, and I still get fooled often enough. I've got a small box of counterfeits, modified coins, and misattributed coins I've bought over the years. It's how you learn.

I'm definitely not fudding silver or telling anyone to avoid buying coins. Just be wary of any super deals if you're not an expert, and if in doubt buy from the LCS or pedigreed slabs or from large online dealers. Still might get a fake on rare occasions, but it's extremely unlikely.

Yeah man same here, not so much nowadays but it's a lifelong learning process that we'll never truly master. I've kept all the fakes I got scammed on as stern reminders to do better and as objects to study so I don't fall for it again. Picrel I ran across is actually recorded in catalogs as authentic. I keep it because I believe the catalog entry is mistaken, but I don't know for a fact that it's not correct. I think the worst I've been taken on a coin was $70 so nothing to loose sleep over, I kept them all. Been scammed on artifacts for upwards of $400 (god-damned camera tricks, immediately obvious fakes in-hand) though so I got my rightful refunds for those. Might seem silly or cuckish to eat the coin losses but if you don't take the punishment and internalize blame you won't really learn. Things like that tablet or a few other different major scores each alone more than pay for all the fakes multiple times over so I'm not complaining, a good education isn't free but the expertise you build pays dividends forever.

I always hated them but a few years back I got some slabbed coins and kinda liked having the unquestionable authenticity of the things. But then they look out of place mixed with normal holders, so I started buying the lighthouse fake slab holders so my collection would match. OCD lol. I'll eventually just pay the money to get my entire collection slabbed by NGC, but right now I still have a couple coins I want to trade up on, so no hurry. Once I have the very best example of every coin in the collection I'll get them slabbed.

Either one is possible, but my current guess is that it's from a 1920's diner in California that happened to have the same name as my Colorado saloon.

I have a buddy that's an expert on that maker and he advises me that the die used is outside the date range of the business it's attributed to. So either the expert is wrong in dating the die (unlikely), the business lasted longer than records indicate (also unlikely because prohibition), or the coin is fake or comes from a different town.
