EXCEPT…

The actual gold reserves held by China and Russia haven’t increased all that much. On the above chart, it’s the red bar. And while it has tripled/quadrupled (estimated), it still makes up less than 5% of China’s estimated reserve holdings (it’s held steady at 2.5% ish, China is just a growing country). Russia has surged to a whopping ~16% to ~17% of their reserves being gold. When you compare that to the modest holdings of the US (~75%) or Germany (~70%), you can see why the figures are alarming. Furthermore, they don’t use dollars in China or Russia. I dare you to try. China already has special drawing rights with the IMF (along with half a dozen currency issuers), so Russia and China are generally using the Yuan to trade in (because why on earth wouldn’t they?). Neither the Ruble, nor the Yuan, nor China’s domestic Renminbi are pegged to the dollar at all, and haven’t been since everything was pegged to gold in the 70s.

The countries that stand to benefit the most from returning to a gold standard are the US, Germany, and other western european nations. They hold the most gold, and gold per capita. China and Russia would be committing economic suicide if they pushed for a new gold standard, especially since Russia would lose power in the EU and China would lose monetary sovereignty that their economy is heavily reliant on (they need to be able to print money and swap it with debt securities to flood the market, keeping currency value low, since exports have driven their real growth; yes this is currency manipulation; no that’s not an inherently bad thing).

The problem with the gold standard is that you have to have marked periods of deflation to maintain currency viability. Imagine it this way:

You have 10 people and 10 ounces of gold. Per capita is 1 oz each. 10 oz of gold is worth everything each of these 10 humans can produce. Then the population increases to 100 people. Now the 10 oz of gold is worth everything the 100 people can produce. The value of the gold has gone up vs relative goods, meaning prices dropped on those goods. Sounds great, right?
It isn’t so great -this doesn’t give any incentive to spend money. Why on earth would you buy something today when the price is going to drop tomorrow? Economic activity and growth come from spending, not from saving. Saving has perks, and we need to disencourage it slightly to keep an economy growing, hence inflation targets. The gold standard makes inflation targets harder to hit (and they aren’t easy to achieve anyway in modern industrialized societies, since we can increase production cheaply and easily for many things).

So it’s obvious Russia and China aren’t itching to go to gold, they are just diversifying their reserve holdings. It’s pretty clear that the benefits of the gold standard don’t outweigh the drawbacks in the western world.

While we are talking about old silber, i wasn't doing too hot lately on ebay, scored a bunch of OK-to-mediocre deals for the past weeks.

But today the trend reversed, i did really good on 2 lots a guy was liquidating (among many, and not just coins but a bunch of old gold jewelry, ancient pocket watches, exotic wood cabinets, marbles, etc... probably unloading a heirloom previously owned by a recently croaked dignitary). I wish i was more familiar with how to guess gold weight on items, because some stuff went for real cheap. Probably well below gold's spot even before accounting for the historical/decorative value... It for sure was a bargain but i was too short in cash to give it a chance.

Anyway, here's the first slurp from today : 27€ for this lot of guldens, each of those easily sell for 20 bux so i'm really happy.

Here's le plat de resistance. Most coins aren't that impressive but for 2 : the Louis XV double Sol, and the Teston from pope Paul VI, 1557, minted by the pontifical states!
Very rare coin you don't stumble upon very often to say the least. It went below the radar of other slurpers today because i got the lot for 170€, which is basically what's the lot is worth once you remove those two coins.

Second layer surprise is this belgian Leopold Ist 5F, when you flip it, it's a very limited mintage to celebrate the wedding of the duke and duchess of Brabant. Worth a very pretty penny ; only 32K minted total for this 5 Francs.
Overall i expect to x3 my monies on this. But in truth i know i won't be able to sell away the pontifical coin so i'll break even + some change kek.

Third slurp isn't from the same seller, and not that noteworthy, but it's something i wanted for a while because it's pretty tricky to find and pretty expensive usually : a russian spoon from the late 1800s.
Lot of fake ancient russian silver out there, and also a shitload of people mistakenly selling plated silver as russian silver because of the [84] hallmark (in one case it's the weight of silver plating used for 20 tableware items, and in imperial Russia it was the zolotnik value system (zol=1/72th of a pound, 84 = .875 purity).

I usually buy R9 and R10, but you'd be amazed how often I pick those up for a couple bucks and sell them for a couple hundred. Or a couple thousand.

Liquidity is a problem here as well, it can take years to sell an R9 or 10 but they all eventually do sell. R3 I can usually unload within a month or two at about 2x. There's a lot more buyers in that price range.

Yeah, the token dealers here are all making money on our own, so we're not as interested in taking a cut of someone else's profits. Also we're sort of a brotherhood, we do a lot of stuff for each other for free. So making money off another dealer would seem a bit wrong. We're all friends, we try not to rip each other off. I like any gold coin. I like to do the labor math. I've panned gold out of lots of streams and rivers. A good gold placer you can pan about a gram a day if you work nonstop and know what you're doing. It's back breaking hard labor, and it'll take you 10 or 12 hours of it to get a gram, but it can be done. That gram will average around 80% pure in most of the US. Some places are more pure, some less.

that gold was probably not produced by individual dudes working with gold pans, but it's fun to know that it represents 9 days of hard labor by a strong man in a rich gold placer. It's fun math. 3 of those per month is close to what a man can pan by himself. 36 per year.

but that measure almost every gold coin out there is extremely cheap. We don't work nearly that hard or that long to buy the things now.
