At least on Polkadot, you lock your tokens up and essentially say 'hey I trust this validator to validate correctly and not do terrible things' and for that 'bet' you get a reward of a certain amount of tokens every era. currently on Polkadot, if you're doing it properly (i.e., not going through an exchange) you're looking at about 15% APY. I cash out my DOT monthly and I live in the UK so can consider it 'income' so it gets taxed accordingly (basically fuck all - £15k tax free or whatever, then the rest of it goes up to eventually 40% but only a tiny amount hits that bracket). It's a pretty good way to live. I'm retired at 34 years old holding about 40k DOT
