Every 4 years, the issuance rate of new Bitcoin gets cut in half.
It started at 50 coins per block, then havled to 25, then 12.5, then 6.25. This, the 4th, halving (sometime in April) will cut it to 3.125 BTC per block.
When this happens, the miners costs remain the same, so the price BTC sells for must double in order for them to continue making the same amount of money.
This event gets front-run by quite a few months. People know it's coming and have seen it happen several times at this point, so they buy. This drive price up. People see the price rising and FOMO in. Price rises more. Finally the halving happens, price rises more. More FOMO, more price rise, more FOMO, etc.
What you get is a speculative bubble that plays out over the course of 18 months. The peaks have happened VERY consistently ~16-18 months after the halving event. We are currently in the early bull market, 5 months from the halving.
