Most people don't like the grey, but it's inoffensive and is easier to flip than an opinionated design style (Mediterranean, Bohemian, etc). The people who design in this style are just looking to maximize return on investment and that grey is a cheap way to redesign a home.

The most important part is *a good neighborhood*. Then you can check sales data or just drive around and visually identify the cheaper houses. Then you identify your expected selling price, which gives you a budget. Then you can go to work:

Carpet in a basement is nice; till it gets wet constantly cause basements leak. Nope. Ditch the carpet. Save yourself the mold growth removal headache and the carpet replacement costs.Same goes with flooring in a basement. Unless it's made for such environments that shit will rot and buckle and mold to. Also if your basement ceiling where your plumbing is for your upstairs fixtures is covered you might want to keep that exposed. A leak happens you'd never know till that shit rotted or molded unless it was a big one. Which again costs extra to fix that.
