META

As revenue was growing 23.2%, costs and expenses decreased 7.5% to $20.398B. This put operating income at $13.748B, which was good for growth of 142.7% as operating margin popped from 20.4% for the year ago comp to an impressive 40.3%. After interest and taxes, net income printed at $11.583B, which was up 168%.

Remember, this is CEO Mark Zuckerberg's "Year of Efficiency" and it sure looks like it as profitability has been prioritized and expenses minimized.

I discovered a fool proof 100% consistent way of making stocks drop.

Basically the strategy is that, I do my own research, think long and hard about a stock I really like, and then get this right? I buy the stock.

immediately after following my purchase, the stock drops. Its been so consistent and reliable, I pretty much purposely buy stocks that I want to drop and its NEVER failed me yet.

I just bought SPY at 414, so you already know its going much much lower. Anyways just thought id share this tip with you all

The thing about the VIX and the reason I like shorting it so much is when the market goes up, VIX futures roll down, when the market crabs, VIX futures roll down and often when the market crashes but doesn't crash too hard or too fast or on too bad news the VIX surprisingly remains fairly steady and sometimes will actually drop. VIX only really moons when markets go nuts to the downside on some really bad news. Unless the market is surfing the all time high I actually prefer shorting VIX versus buying dips in other stocks. The performance and accuracy is much better. To wit I've been in SVIX for several days and despite the market puking I'm only down a little over a percent. At the slightest hint of a recovery SVIX will pump 15%-20%

Not really. As I just said, other stocks are flat. The truth is that outside FAGMAN there's already been a strong selloff to the point where RSP is down YTD. Now the megacap tech shit is finally catching up, which will likely mark the conclusion of this leg downward.
Equal weight has a slightly different dynamic, since FAGMAN all correlates strongly and makes up such a large portion of market weight SPY. While the largecaps do hold a lot of the market liquidity, RSP is also useful to look at, as are yields - which are actually reversing significantly today after 10Y failed to hold above 5%.

If you zoom out, we've been crabbing for the better part of 3 years now and this is really just more of the same. These relative low points mark a good opportunity to rebalance towards more stocks and less cash, but long term I expect this crabbing to continue as long as real yields stay high.

>shorting vol seems like it's a money printer but up until now i've just been swinging stocks. how do you prefer to trade it?
Very very carefully actually. Always keep volmageddon in mind. I use the VIX6M/VIX and VIX3M/VIX ratios to plot where I think the VIX is over extended on the upside. I also watch VIX futures like a hawk. If they go much under 20 I'm not interested in shorting since the risk of a violent explosion of volatility. It's not free money but it is doable just watch your position and remember all of the VIX ETNs are based on VIX futures so if they start getting fucky you need to get out. I use stops on my VIX shorts and will happily flip to going long VIX if things break down completely such as the dump in 2020. If you want to get your feet wet pull up the SVOL chart. It's only about 0.25x levered short so the risk of blowing up is very small

>what is your reasoning to short volatility in a time of rising interest rates, two wars, an election cycle, and global unrest?
There was a study done a while back that showed part of the reason why the poor get poorer and the rich get richer in the stock market. It boiled down to this, stock market winners make better trades, losers worse. This happens in all market environments but in times of crisis and high volatility, the process speeds up. Better traders are even more profitable with the opportunity to make a lot more trades. My point is, if you're a decent trader with positive expectancy don't be afraid of crisis and volatility. You should anticipate it and be happy when it comes. I don't just blindly short vol whenever I feel like. For one thing I don't short it when it's too low and I don't short it when it's too high. When vol is super low, being long the indexes is the better trade and when vol is super high, being long vol or cash is the better trade. The middle area is best with the least risk relative to the potential reward. As long as the VIX and the VIX cash ratios remain in the medium zone I'll continue to swing short. When that's no longer the case I'll move on

VIX futures trade 23 hours a day on week days. If something like that happened I would get stopped out and then flip long. If SVIX got liquidated it would affect my account only the amount that was in SVIX. The remainder would be placed in UVIX as soon as was possible

>>buying vol AFTER the nukes drop
There was a huge hours long argument on here yesterday about the momentum factor in investing. Of all the factors it's the most robust and has been shown to persist in all markets going back hundreds of years. There is no proven answer to why it persists but it does. One explanation is information isn't distributed instantly. Some traders get the memo sooner and react. Some traders get the memo later and react then. After the dust settles the slow pokes get in closer to the end of the move and cause it to get over extended. Happens on the upside and the downside. If you go through your charts carefully and look at all the "happenings" you'll see that the move never exhausts itself immediately. You can easily get in as long as you don't wait too long. Think about NVDA when it had its recent blowout earnings and gapped from 300 to almost 400. That was it right? Nope. It kept going another 30%. Most big events are like that especially a dropped nuke. Not that the markets would even open so it's hypothetical anyway

Treasury Direct doesn't let you interact with the secondary market; it only allows you to buy newly-issued securities on scheduled auction days. You can't buy on non-auction days. You can't sell; you have to transfer the security to a broker for that. And you can't transfer it to a broker for 45 days, IIRC.

To expand on >>56477602 slightly there is a point where volatility gets so high that it just keeps going until it exhausts itself. Somewhere in the 90th-95th percentile. It's helpful to look at more than just the VIX though. Pull up some ratios between the different parts of the cash VIX term structure, backtest ratios between fixed constant maturity points on the VIX futures term, e.g. 30 day constant maturity and 60 day constant maturity. Do enough work and it'll be clear where the positive EV is for leaving VIX alone, shorting it, and going long. It's counterintuitive but it works. I know because I've been doing it a long time
