Why has this become the norm over the past 6 months or so? Is it because anons are too insecure to have the next OP associated with their posts in the current thread? Is that why they switch to phone posting to announce the new thread so often now? This happens way too frequently as of late to just be coincidence.

It was a Canadian i think. I found a nice silver box on some auction site, but it would have been 18k€. The Canadian spent some time on that same page and found a German strong box, something very old to hold ammo or explosives, probably predating WWI. He bought it for a pretty high penny, but it is an awesome historic artifact and a great treasure chest.

The heft of the mass of silver is quite satisfying. It does put you into the mindset of collecting a lot more of it because the dopamine rush. The small amount of gold for the same price can leave you with buyer's remorse. This is the lower-income man's trap.It feels good, but you will end up with a ponderous heap after years of stacking.
My recommendation: stack gold, and buy silver that pleases or means something to you. That alone should help you create a prodigious pile.
Also, palladium is very low right now. It would be odd to go for a meme metal so early on, but consider it - a bar, not a coin (because high premiums).

>Is it okay to keep coins in an ammo box?
1 - Depends on the coin. If it old constitutional with no numismatic value, sure. Pile away.
2 - If it's a new coin and so far unmarred, not if it's loose in the box. New coins are priced with their lowest premiums. When the mint runs end and dealer stock runs out, they gain numismatic value. If they get banged around and scratched and marred, they lose the numismatic gain. This holds true for artful generic items too.
Pic related - if the assholes who owned this before me had preserved it well, I would have paid much more for it than spot, despite its generic provenance.
tl;dr - throwing stuff into a box is kids' play. It's okay for kids' coins.

If you want to buy moar, they have a sale on some of the 19the century coins here. I don't know how you calculate those premiums, but this comes out to 23.36/oz, which is basically 1 euro above spot price.
I bought some 5Fr hercule a couple weeks ago for 16.75 (23.15/oz). That was the first time I ever bought junk. The only problem with buying from dealer is you can't see the exact coins you'll get (unlike ebay). Most of them were in reasonable shape (given how they're well over 100 years old coins) but a couple were iffy. One of them is just really worn, so face value and date are no longer visible. The other one has a hole drilled near the top (someone used it a decoration?) and I don't know what that does to the value of the coin. It's kind of dumb that people do this coin mutilation.

I wouldn't worry too much, coin and bullion dealers need their reputation. Yeah they could make a few bucks by ripping off someone new but they would lose the rest of their business.

Thanks bros. I'm new to this and still learning, and I have not come across the term Numismatic before, so I'll have to watch out for that. I'm just trying to find a good store near me now so I can go buy this afternoon. I'm not really fussed about getting the most amazing deal ever, I basically want to go in and do a straightforward transaction for ~80oz of silver coins. Don't care about rarity or anything, I just want to get some silver for a fair price, fair quality and maybe a bit of variety in the designs. Other than that, I'm easy.
I'm so excited bros, I want to get rid of this big loaf of cash and have something valuable in its place.

Yeah you just want to avoid high premiums. Numismatics are coins that have been professionally graded and placed in a plastic holding case for preservation, pic related.
You can see you'd be paying $60 for not even one ounce of silver when if you bought basic rounds or coins you could be getting much more for your money.

Made me look...

>Today, the Hudson half dollar is one of the scarcer silver commemoratives. But in the time of its issue the Hudson was subject to controversy and distribution abuse. The event commemorated, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city of Hudson, New York (population of 14,000 at the time), was pretty obscure to begin with. The original issue price was $1 per coin, but it was rumored that one dealer had purchased 7,500 of the original 10,008 mintage at 95 cents each. He (or someone) apparently held the hoard off the market as prices in the aftermarket soon reached $9. Collectors were outraged, but this was a situation often repeated in the 1934-1939 commemorative era.

>Today, Hudsons are highly prized by commemorative collectors, especially in Gem condition. The typical Hudson grades MS63 to MS65. There are some circulated grade examples but the vast majority of Hudsons are mint state. Superb MS66 examples are rare, and there are only a handful of MS67 examples known. Most Hudson have semi-frosty luster and many are toned to various degrees. Strike can often be somewhat of an issue and sophisticated collectors look for specimens with "fully struck sails."

>Apparently a bunch of dumb kids are selling off their (old coins) inheritence for a quick buck
that's just a meme I came up with, the actual truth is a bit more complicated.

what we've been seeing is daddy boomer dies of the coof. Momma boomer can't afford to keep his shit so she sells the cars, the coins, the boats, the house, everything. She's about to lose everything, so everything goes super cheap. She doesn't have time to mess with selling coins off individually, and she needs the money fast, so suddenly you've got a coin collection worth like a million dollars going to the first person with $50k cash to offer. That person (me) doesn't have time to inventory, research, and grade every single coin, so I just stick it on ebay with a starting price of a buck. At the beginning, the coins go for about normal retail. But after a few thousand coins have sold, my buyers are starting to run out of money and interest. So the prices start dropping quickly. You hit a point where a $100 coin might be selling for $6. I don't care, because I paid less than $6 for it, and I made my money back on the first 500 sales. But it ends up being a really good deal for Momma Boomer who needs money fast, Coin Dealer who wants to make a relatively easy buck, and Collector, who gets to buy coins at prices we haven't seen since 1915.

the only one that really gets screwed is Daddy Boomer who sunk a million bucks into coins and then dropped dead from the wu-flu, but he undoubtedly had fun collecting those coins and in the end it wasn't a complete loss or anything. Probably held their value about as well as timeshares or houseboats or RV's or whatever else he wasted cash on over the years.

I don't, just pointing out that even the worst collectorino coins are a better investment that that other bullshit that most plebs spend all their "disposable" income on.
I only stack the cheapies. I buy gold krugs when they're < 1800 euro, and I buy wieners when they're < 24 euro.
I've been wanting an old 8-bit computer system for ages, but the prices are stupid because of "retro bubble". I'm not going to pay 12 wieners for this thing. I'll wait until the monetary system collapses under its own weight, and then I'll offer 1 of my 3383 oz, maybe (maybe). That's assuming the computer system is working perfectly, no repairs needed, and all peripherals are included, etc.
In the meantime, I use emulators, maybe I'll even write my own retro OS for cheapass ARM boards like Terry Davis did, if this collapse takes long. And I keep stacking, constantly transfering worthless fiat currency to silver and gold.

Remember like a year ago or so when GEC would get like 200 or so 5 RMs in stock and someone would post in the /pmg/ thread and we would buy them up pretty much that day.. price was nice too like $15 per coin or something like that. I would always get 10-20. Those days are over now aren't they? and not coming back.. now when you search on GEC there is no results.

Only good way to get them now is to snipe an auction on ebay where a small seller has listed a low starting price and you are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you can find someone selling a lot of several. Otherwise, the 2s go for ~$20 and 5s go for ~$40 with the "buy it now" option from big sellers.

There are two types of inflation talked about on pmg.
One is: prices go up, wages go up, reinse and repeat. This has little effect on the prices of PMs, because...
The other is actually currency devaluation - prices go up because the local currency becomes less valuable. If the currency is stable, local inflation is irrelevant: the price of an international commodity remains stable in that currency as well.
So in some countries, the price of PMs is really going up. In others, nope.

If the seller didn't even update the tracking number on ebay and you didn't receive anything, it's definitely the seller's fault, you are guaranteed to get your money back if you open a ticket.

Me on the other hand, i've no idea how it will play out, since ebay (as usual) discharged themselves and simply sent my evidences (thankfully i autistically take pics of everything : automaton bill, stamps with tracking numbers, custom declation,..) directly to the buyer's bank. Estimated delay : 8 weeks or more. In the meantime they froze the 100 bux from the order.

If the bank accept the payment opposition, i don't even know if i'm covered by ebay's refund policy, even though i did everything by the book.

Look at it more rational, you wasted money on premiums, the rest is a bet for the future. Don't be an idiot about it just because some others in here are.

Besides, i believe that if people can sample an ounce of silver and gold first, they will go for gold all the time. It also performed better than the S&P500 in the last 1, 5, 10 and 20 years. :-)

Also I could go and buy several ounces of gold right now, but my plan is to only use tip money (cash), hence why it'll take a few more mknths for an ounce of gold. I don't care though desu fren, I won't be selling it and I don't spend money anyway. It's basically a better form for my tip cash to take while I continue to never spend it. It isn't, cash is widely recognized and accepted and that offsets it's perceived inherent flaws such as inflation.
Be honest to yourself and stop parroting the rationalizations you hear here. You can't pay a tank of gas with PMs. It's an investment, far less liquid than cash.
Always doubt anything, particularly what you hear here.
That said, i don't see harm in buying PMs with disposable income, and holding it for a long time.
Another thing, maybe gold isn't better. Maybe i'm wrong. Maybe we are both wrong. Deeply look into it, listen to all the voices and always be skeptic.

It's an addiction easy enough.

Yes anon I totally agree. I have only been in one store in my life, today, and I even told the guy to expect me regularly. He laughed and said he hears that a lot. Real nice guy, and he tested the purity right in front of me for peace of mind. Just overall a very good experience. I was so excited when I got in there and got my silver, that it actually made me very tired. I was just buzzing to be there. I can't wait to go back. I think I'm already hooked.

Because my safe is not huge. This gold takes up a tiny space but is worth ~$28,000. If it were more 100oz bars it would be around 1100 ounces of silver or about seventy (70) pounds.

Don’t get me wrong. I intend to acquire more silver. Gold is a better store of value though with lower premiums in almost all cases per dollar spent and it’s more compact plus it doesn’t tarnish.

A close up on the countermarks. Spanish silver was widely circulated in most trading posts, but since the nips, chinks and gooks weren't familiar with our money yet, each time they got their hand onto some European silver they added a hallmark to guarantee to the silver content. The more a coin circulated between trading posts, the more marks they got, a sort of ancient passport for coins.
