Hey I have a question that hopefully one of you guys can answer. So I own 10 acres of land in a geologically complex place near some mountains. It's located on a Faultline. There are lots of different types of rocks and lots of different types of clays. How would I go about knowing if my land has any valuable commodities on/under it?

Like is there a quick way to ballpark what I might have without having to study geology like crazy or send tons of samples to a lab?

that depends on your location, but if your in the US, you may be able to look up your region through the USGS, they have loads of documentation available online. You can also simply look up your regions historic mineral production, through sites like Mindat or through your local archives. Often simply googling your region with the tag "gold mining" or similar will produce some surprising results. A basic idea of geology and how ore bodies form is a good idea in general too though, so find some beginners geology books.

Look for exposed bedrock, and try to figure out what it is. If your areas known for gold, look for things like quartz veins, oxidized material in sediments or magnetic sediments in soils. When all else fails, a simple set of test gold panning around your property might give you some clues.

>valuable commodities
gravel, sand, volcanic rock, rocks that look pretty can all be sold for profit. So, what do you mean valuable? I drive down the road and see several businesses "mining" gravel and sand from a large drainage area, selling to business that make concrete. Depends on where you live, your local, state, federal government, or local clubs likely have geologic reports/maps/papers for the general area, you can start there. Do not expect to find much, humans have been searching on foot and horseback for hundreds of years for anything of value and extracting it as fast as possible when found.

A fault is just a crack with displacement. Faults are everywhere of everysize.

It sucks how much control the government has over the opening or reopening of a mine. In the old days, people just mined, albeit sometimes with the permission of the local lord, who had no reason to deny permission since the mining enriched him and his fiefdom.

i would be thrilled if the US and Canada got rid of a lot of the current environmental regs, and went with a few more relaxed ones instead. A lot of those regulations are there thanks to companies fucking up or ignoring problems.

I agree that miners somewhat brought regulation down on themselves by their practices. But I think the regulation regime in North America has gone too far and it's time for the pendulum to swing the other way.

oh i totally agree, the regulation regime is getting to the point that even established projects arent getting grandfather treatment anymore, and getting denied modern operating permits. Things need a role back or the industry in NA will become NA.

I would think that underground mining would have to be less environmentally impactful or destructive, in general, than surface mining, and should be used more often even despite higher cost and risk to miners. (Underground miners accept the risk as part of the job, and it is a very interesting and adventurous job.)

yep, now we study the things that went wrong before and we avoid them.

this is also true in open pits.

since both types of mines are designed to keep pollution out of the water and off the ground, the biggest difference is that one of them leaves an enormous hole in the surface of the earth. Which a lot of people would say isn't very environmentally friendly.
