The short term market selloff on PXD news was a mistake on the market's part which I took advantage of. Ever since that silly sale XOM has been trending up. XOM has a bit of a negative history with big acquisitions but this time they're on the ball. The acquisition is simply accretive and the price is right. Seeing PXD shareholders complaining that the price was too low was a good indication that it's a good buy for XOM.

So now that I'm getting another pay bump that brings me back to shuffling my investments again. Long term I'm good; (401k,pension,divvy,emergency fund that don't "exist" and maybe s.s). In the here and now present I'm good. (salary) It's the middle part that I need to beef up a bit. (middle part; age 54 - 70). Cause the middle is covered solely by my pension. Which comes to me for life. But still. Shat happens and all that. I want my 401k to roll untouched long as I can till I'm forced to take the RMD at age 73 so it has the room to grow fat. Will it be the end of the world if I'm forced to hit it before 73? Not really. Unless I somehow live to be 115 that is. Which doesn't count my pension in that either. Still. I'd rather the green be just there just in case.

A little late to the party but no matter, it's just getting started. AEM and NEM are stable & safe gold majors. HL is great if you're bullish on silver. BTO/BTG is good too but be wary that much of their revenue comes from their Mali mine which may carry some jurisdictional risk.

Loads of other riskier companies with worse fundamentals and more leverage but as far as majors go AEM and NEM are top tier.

On the contrary. The problem in 2018 is people were shorting VIX futures while spot VIX was in single digits. Also the volatility ETNs were a much larger fraction of the volume of VIX futures than they are now and they were vulnerable due to their mechanical method of rebalancing every day between 4 and 4:15 pm without exception. The present environment isn't comparable at all. VIX is much higher, the rebalancing algorithm isn't exploitable, and VIX ETNs is a tiny fraction of VIX futures volume. There is always the possiblity of a blowup but comparing the present time to 2018 isn't it so you'll have to come up with a more plausible scenario

They're also focusing on developing that one yuge copper-gold mine in literal no-man's land somewhere in Pakistan (Reko Diq) so that could be an immense opportunity or risk in the longer term depending on how you see it.
>GDXJ
yeah why not. I've noticed that GDX/GDXJ and SIL/SILJ don't really have substantially different behaviors so shouldn't matter too much which you pick for gold or silver exposure if you're an ETF guy. They do a decent job at following the sector and are a good candidate for options degeneracy

Don't forget the environmental damage caused by the massive mining and processing of all those materials, the large landmass taken by wind & solar installments causing damage to habitats, and the ironic location where used wind turbine blades and solar panels end up -- the landfill.

It's all such a clown show, and Chinaman Xi keeps reaping the benefits. Coal demand hit a new ATH last year. I wonder when coal demand will peak, if ever. Really puts into perspective the absurdity of people constantly calling for peak oil demand. It just ain't happening any time soon.

>wind
literal meme, i don't understand how it got popular.
>solar
the only hurdle with solar is energy storage; once people start realizing that lithium-ion batteries are complete dogshit and have stagnated for 30 years we'll see improvements in energy storage (e.g zinc-ion, sodium-ion, hell the one concrete and water capacitor concept that MIT released recently).
>nuclear
this i agree with, but i do also think that closed loop geothermal plants will be a competitor in 5-10 years. maybe fusion too, but outside of huge multi-nation projects the scene is starting to become filled with startups trying to make a quick buck.

The minimum to invest in stocks is any amount you won't need in the next couple years.

A few hundred is plenty to get started. A few thousand can do most things involving shares and options on most companies.

Just remember gains are a percent of what you invest so don't expect to make a huge bank off $500. And don't try too hard to run before you can walk by abusing leverage, options, margin, etc.

Granted solar has some value for a residential owner but it doesn't make sense at scale most of the time. Wind has to be built at scale but current material and credit related realities make wind financially impossible.
>geothermal
Exciting but drilling and casing technology needs to improve.
>fusion
Bit of a meme... They're developing it but even once they get it to a financially sensible stage it still seems like the capital and maintenance costs will make it marginal. Until proven otherwise.

Theres no foreclosures at the moment because everyone is just holding with their locked in low rates. It takes REITs about 5-7 years before they have to refinancce legally (they can't lock in 30 years like we can) so overtime they should start shedding properties slowly onto the market. But you definitely need to look into legally owning something since its an aseet that you can tap for value & is nessecary to live. HOWEVER -- home ownership sucks if you're gonna move around a lot since there are a lot of fees associated with selling it. But lets say you own a home fully in the clear but need to move...

They think bonds are oversold basically, that inflation is solved so rates can come down. TLT being a 20 year index, it would capture a lot of gains on a falling yield. Their idea of a yield curve uninverting is that the short end goes down to where it was around 2019 and that the long end falls with it. The fed restarting QE during a recession would also cause their yields to fall even more as most of the QE goes into treasuries.
To be fair to the TLT bagfags there are some real reasons to think the fed would do this, as they historically have always bailed out the bond market and the treasury also very clearly wants rates lower. I don't think it's going to happen because bond demand looks like complete shit right now and too many people that are long are sitting on huge unrealized losses, but I understand their reasoning.

the problem with miners is that they suck ass for gains. you're better off just buying calls on GLD

gold was up +1.50% today which is a big move for gold, but GDX and GDXJ were down on the day. when gold goes up but stocks fall - miners are still stocks, so they get dragged down with the rest of the market, even if gold is pumping

there are 3 ways to play gold:
buy physical bars and coins
calls on GLD
junior mining stocks

>miners are still stocks, so they get dragged down with the rest of the market, even if gold is pumping
This is not really the case. Miners do tend to move alongside the metals. But miners sometimes respond to metal movements, and sometimes they try to predict metal movements.
>mids and majors are fucking shit
Look at how much HL or AEM for example has moved when gold and silver have made relatively smaller moves. Majors also provide good exposure to metals. Granted if you want a lot of leverage then you'll have to go with calls for select majors or an ETF... or juniors. But juniors are a lot riskier and they tend to lag majors during a bullrun.
>buy physical bars and coins
Terrible way if gains are your primary concern. Extra fees and hassle, and no dividends or growth or any extra benefit when compared to miners. But physical gold is an important hedging tool.
