The rule of 72 is an important rule for dividend growth investors. Take 72 and divide it by the average dividend growth if a stock and that will tell you how many years it will take for the dividend yield to double. Say a company raises their dividend by about 11% annually and the yield is 2.1%.
72/11= 6.54
It will take 6 and a half years for your yield on cost to reach 4.2%.
>but why don’t you just buy a stock that already yields 4%?
Well that’s simple. A company that pays out that much up front typically doesn’t raise their dividends more than a couple % each year if they raise them at all. Let’s see how long a company who averages a 3% raise each year will take for the yield to double.
72/3=24
24 years. No thanks, I’m a dividend growth investor

Quick reminder that dividend growth investors would have you buying KO as a "safe" investment at 30x earnings into a youth population that avoids sugary drinks, and a boomer population that is racing to get drugged up on ozempic.
Meanwhile, they would have you ignoring PBR these past few years because the yield is "too high", its "unsustainable", a "yield trap".

The best rule to successful investing is to use your brain. The quality/profitability factors may lead to some small outperformance, but on the whole dividends are irrelevant.
As a personal exercise, I highly recommend you all do the math on how long it'll take for a 3% yield growing at 5% to outperform a 20% yield today. Spoiler: It never will.

This is the updated chart, from the one I posted yesterday - it is only going up. They were/are buying. Something broke, and they were forced to (silently) sharply boost liquidity.

Injection after injection after injection - something big broke. We just haven't heard about it yet.
They are desperate. And you know what's wild? Even with them sharply boosting liquidity, even with their intervention(s), not only the Fed, but foreign central banks worldwide, bonds are STILL selling off extremely hard
That's how you know shit is actually broken, that we are legitimately in crisis, when despite massive central bank interference, the bond market continues to shit itself
