Guys, I just want to sell some stuff to make some money on the side, not do huge volume amazon FBA or start a shopify store or something like that.

Just here and there, and the fees are outrageous, almost 15% on final cost of item INCLUDING SHIPPING?

so if i buy something that costs 65 dollars and try to sell it for 85 to make 20 bucks, that's 14 dollars of fees given to ebay.

In some instances you can even end up OWING money buy selling something on their platform what the fuck? the margin you have to have will make your item unsellable in many cases.

are there other platforms that don't fuck their users as much? it seems amazon and walmart are even worse.

There are threads on this board where folks openly discuss how they rip off eBay by claiming their order never arrived. eBay has to keep the fees high to fund the insurance rates caused by these morons.

okay sure, but other than that, ebay doesn't do anything and their website is shitty and buggy and there is like no customer support. at least amazon has a vast shipping and distribution system and will do the shipping for you for a fee. Not saying that is worth it, but i just don't see what ebay is actually doing other than having the same shitty buggy 90's looking website that hasn't changed in 20 years except increasing fees.

Then sell your stuff somewhere else? Oh wait thats right... you have no market. That's why ebay charges egregious fees, it would otherwise cost you similar or more to host your own service and perform marketing to draw traffic to it. Ebay is an established brand, they don't need to advertise. People just use it because they know it exists and probably has what they want.

Been selling shit on eBay for about a year now. I find that after the cost of shipping, the cost of packing materials, and eBay fees it really isn't worth it unless I get the item I'm selling for free or close to free.

I sold an old PS2 game for $9. After eBay took their cut, I was getting $7.40. The bubble mailer envelope was $0.68. Media Mail shipping at USPS was $3.92. I pocketed a grand total of $2.80 off that $9 sale....

Can relate, I run a store and mostly the stuff I’ve been “gifted” to sell are profitable. Cost basis of $0. If I buy a pair of shoes for $200 and sell for $250, eBay fees take $20 and if you promoted an ad, even more on top of that. In some cases, they’ve taken so much in fees and marketing that i lost money. Always suggest keeping tabs of shipping and expenses to write off against income

Get your stuff cheaper as in buy for $10 sell for $100 if you can’t 10x 20x on the smaller stuff than forget about it.

Selling shit on ebay is for fucking boomers, you make more by affiliate linking. Literally have to carry zero inventory, no dealing with s&h and still make 5% on average.

its not just 15% they basically force you to use the promotions otherwise your listing will get buried and never seen. so its more like 20-25% fee. get fucked and stop using ebay.

etsy charges 6.5 % and a 3% credit card processing fee, so it's better but still not great.

only good alternatives are facebook markeplace who charge 5% but it's geared towards only local so the market is smaller. and bonanza which nobody has heard of .

mercari is flat 10% but that's still high, why can't these platforms meet us in the middle and charge like 5-6%?

The only way to make it on Ebay is to churn through volume products with large markups compared to your regular business listings.

It feels like a ripoff, but then you try selling the same thing on Craigslist or another local site and if you even get any interest people are lowballing trying to offer 20-30% less than the item goes for on eBay. Usually it ends up being about the same, eBay charges more fees and you have shipping, but items tend to sell for more on there than many other platforms as well.
