$100k is definitely the minimum and that is absolute bare minimum. $500k is closer to the level you need where a skilled trader starts throwing off enough money to cover direct bills like mortgage/rent and so on and indirect bills like taxes (in all of their forms) while still having some money left over so you aren't eating pasta or ramen for every meal. You make $150k as a trader on $500k and you're doing pretty well. Most people would agree that level of return is pretty damn good quite frankly. After tax on your income, you've lost almost the down payment on a house though (~$45k), thanks government, but hey you're still above 6 figures. Now shave off your month to month expenses and let's say you aren't living like you're in a monastery and say $3,000 a month is your cost of living.

There goes another $36,000 easily. From your formerly pretty damn good return, you have like $65,000 remaining to reinvest back into your operations or set it aside for the bad times which are inevitable. And that's assuming you're actually good at this. It takes way more money to trade full time comfortably than what "a lot of places" (usually "trader education" bullshit artists) claim. There's a reason people that actually can trade start funds. A great return is nice, but at a certain point the return is more like a marketing tool to draw in capital inflows which the manager then takes a management fee on and that is where the real money is. Otherwise, you are doing a fuckload of work and taking a ton of risk for only decent money.
