What are the general arguments and beliefs behind holding gold?

I bought a bunch of silver in like 2012. Over time I began to view it as a more industrial metal and sold it all recently for about what I paid. I'm considering stacking gold instead since it appears to be a more solid asset for wealth preservation (not growth, which is fine). I am also not concerned with using metals for bartering purposes at any point.

I am thinking of it more as a method to store value "outside the system" and will probably stack like 10 oz, put it in my safe to forget about it. A proper emergency fund if you will. I have significant equity, cash/equivalents, crypto and real estate holdings, so this would occupy a small part of my portfolio.

>> No.56233446

>>56233419
I think as long as you’re buying from a big name dealer and not some private individual, you’ll be fine.

>>56233430
If you don’t care about potential for growth, and bartering, then gold is perfectly fine. Honestly, gold or silver really doesn’t make a huge difference.

Let's try this again. /pmg/ have you ever gifted gold or silver for baby? My friends had their first baby this past weekend. I thought cash would be nice ofc, but the parents are pretty well off, so I also thought gold and silver coins featuring her lunar zodiac animal would make for a great gift.

Dear Moderators and Janitors, this post IS NOT trolling. This post is truthful and it's on topic for this board and this general. As such, please do not delete this post and ban me for "trolling". Precious metals are a great gift for a newborn baby, because gold and silver are long-term stores of wealth. The $300 I'm giving her will be worth profoundly less when she grows up than the $300ish in gold and silver.

We thought it was lame when we were younger, but my aunt gave us 10 year treasury notes for a few birthdays. I actually ended up cashing them in for their mature value when I went to college and they helped contribute a small amount to paying for my tuition, so I was thankful for them at that time.
Financial instruments and precious things are awesome gifts, anon. They help teach kids from a young age to treasure things and to learn their real values. That helps raise a kid who isn't a retard who gives away 20 dollars for a Snickers bar.

If I don't teach kids to believe what I believe, then someone else will teach them to believe other things I might disagree with. As stackers, we have a responsibility to share the knowledge, and the power, that holding physical gold and silver protects people from inflation and other monetary fuckery.

Decided to mark the occasion by doing a stack pic and inventory. I have little too no desire to buy any more silver. I'm probably down 25-40% on melt value today, but I'm sure if you take form into consideration it's nowhere near that bad.

Now I'm debating when to buy gold and how much. I've got $100k in 4 week t bills right now, they mature Halloween, the first day of the next fed meeting. I got another $20k in cash so I don't have to wait until then.
My problem is that I'm not going to want to sell the gold for a profit when it goes up, so I don't want to buy too much.

My wife and I literally did the Anakin and Padme meme when I told her I was going to buy the dip.
>and then sell it when it goes up, right?
>and then sell it when it goes up, right?

I'll think about it. I don't really want to dick with shipping, and I don't want to charge enough to make it worth me doing all that.
I have no idea what would be a fair price. I think the original mintage was like $60?
I see one went on eBay for like $200.

Can your wife not comprehend long term investments? You have enough fiat to warrant buying a few ounces of gold even if you followed the old boomer advise of 10% in pms (which many here would argue is low). Gold could dip lower but no matter what price you enter at, understand this is not a short term trade.

This is why I'm done with silver and the 205 ozt (I forgot the eagle in my wallet, lol) will be enough small change for whatever I may need. This is why I have war nickels and 40% Kennedys. From here I only want to stack gold.

>> No.56240370

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting a paradigm shift in the sense of "government becomes good again!" I've been ruminating on this (perhaps too much) for a while and I've come to the truly saddening conclusion that a confrontational revolution would be the only way to transition to a just system again.

When I say "paradigm shift" I mean a rapid series of events so unstable that they cause the government to lose their grasp on the current inflationary ponzi scheme or even the narrative around it - the end of the road down which the can was always kicked. I'm talking the crash of '29 but even more pressurized and chaotic. Overnight dollar crash, runs on all banks, riots in cities over welfare suspension, emergency services going on strike, etc. And then, hopefully, our day of vindication with the rise of a parallel economy in real money and commodities.

The next crash is going to be fucking insane given the 24 hour news cycle and internet. We're going to see pilpul and narratives so tiny and brief that they can hardly be said to have happened at all, anyone seeing it live will feel like Dr. Manhattan. I think we should all be prepared to document government lies and shilling as a matter of historical record for future generations because things WILL otherwise get buried.

It’s not very liquid I’m guessing. I’m going to get a forge one day. And do some metalwork, I made a bunch of coin rings, sold my equipment, had a lot of Indian engineered stuff, going to go with PEPE tools next time around

Must be a Euro thing.
https://www.usmoneyreserve.com/news/executive-insights/buy-gold-silver-from-bank/
>Some U.S. banks do sell gold bars and coins as well as silver coins, but the vast majority of U.S. banks do not make gold or silver available to the public. Banks usually avoid selling precious metals because of their price fluctuations. And even if a bank does sell gold or silver, their inventories typically don’t measure up to the size and variety of inventory found at precious metals companies and other sellers.

If the seal is intact, it's probably okay. As why he's selling. If it sounds legit, it probably is.

Buy coins, unless this is below spot. Ask what your buyers will think about this.

That is the most stupid question. Why does anyone sell anything?

US Bank blocked a purchase from Bold I tried to make and I had to yell at a lady for 30 minutes for them to let me make the purchase. I buy silver on eBay mostly where they don't know I'm buying shinies
