What is the worst purchase you made after you made a lot of money?
Personally I bought a water cooling cover for my bed for $2500. That shit is awful value, it works but it's definitely not worth the price. Also if it's get too hot in the room it can't go very cold because it uses the ambient air to cool. Thankfully I'm usually more sensible with how I spend my money.

i never made a lot of money so this thread doesn't strictly apply to me but i just need to share somewhere that i am developing a crippling addiction to thriftbooks dot com and have spent over $100 per month the last two months. probably $3-500 each year since COVID.

they're just such a good value bros- a lot of times just $5! and i get a free book with every couple book as part of their rewards program. how can i say no. how can i resist. i am only a man and the flesh is weak.

thank you for letting me share.

i got 13 pounds of William T Vollman for under $20 bros. I got the collected works of Elaine Pagels, Dean Radin and Rupert Sheldrake. Everything Denis Johnson ever wrote- Train Dreams so fucking good bros. Tree of Smoke, a classic. Thomas Pynchon, George Saunders, a good chunk of the NY Tyrant catalog. The entire Deep Politics ouvre- Douglas Valentine, Alfred McCoy, Peter Dale Scott. Enough Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco to start making my own pasta and using "hypertextuality" in conversation. Don Quixote, Pilgrim's Progress, the Decameron and Canterbury Tales for under $20.

I have bought enough books that I actually look forward to the internet getting cut in the CyberPandemic when WW3 kicks off, just so i can finally catch up on all these damn books i've been buying.

I payed $5k for my PC in December and I replaced the GPU a month ago just because it was on sale for like $500 off.
I built it for a specialized render engine (Octane) and using local Ai programs; neither of which is possible with an AMD gpu. They can play vidya games just fine but don't expect them to do any cool shit that relies on Cuda cores.
So I went in to Microcenter to buy a Pepsi or something and I came out with a 4080 and now my utter obsession with 3D modeling has taken a hold of me.
Now my pc cost $6k altogether but that was not something I regret, it's fucking awesome.

I decided to take a vacation in summer of 2021 to Medellin, Colombia. I met up with some girl from Tinder and she totally screwed me by strongly "suggesting" we go to some strip club bar. I ended up geting very drunk, bar fined one of the strippers, and had a threesome where I didn't last more than 5 minutes before passing out. I wouldn't recommend the g920 it's dog shit. The wheel is super small, the feed back is weird and the mount comes loose. The pedals are the worst. I want to drive manual in my sims and there is no clutch feeling and no actual clutching in most games. If you just want to drive a car fast and pretend it's like the real thing then go ahead but unless you can at least replicate the handling and the shifting then I don't think you will use it at all because it's not satisfying. I say all of this as a guy who got a g920 and a shitty manual car and I would never ever compare a g920 to a car ever. Driving is fun but sim racing is not. Late reply but the thread is still up so I'd be glad to tell you a thing or two, anon.
I wish I had tried Cinema 4D from the start. I could never get my head around any other software, and one day I saw my friend messing around on Cinema 4D, and I immediately felt like it clicked in my head.
So my first tip would be to never ever bother with Blender. Blender is basically a meme for 3D Chads. The UI is the most confusing, ass backwards piece of shit that's ever been or ever shall be. And I wasted months trying to learn it.
I believe this is a crucial part of it because it's not fun when you can't understand the ui. Cinema 4D (and Maya) have much more intuitive designs and the work flow is much better, therein accelerating your rate of learning.
That would basically be it desu, get the right software. It has to be easy enough to be fun to learn.
Make models of items in your home. Measure them as precisely as you can, and just figure out how to form them from primative shapes. Start with something really easy like a wine glass or a baseball bat, just to learn the process. Stuff like mesh modifiers will come up before too long if you do this, and you do it once and you'll remember it. For instance, using a laithe modifier for making a wine glass. You'll do it and remember what it does and you build from that. Honestly just stick at it until it's fun, anon. It took me a couple of years but I'm so glad I stuck at it.
Also as early as you can, learn to model using only quads (no triangles and definitely no NGONS). You will thank yourself later.

What's your goal with making models, bro? Actual parts for physical production and metalwork and the likes? Or more like artistic modeling for game engines and renders, animations etc? That's the kind I do. I don't really know much about the other side of things desu. I'm just glad to hear someone is interested in trying it, it's my favorite thing to do, I love everything about it.

>as this thread shows it has nothing to do with gender
Don't be fake, it's obvious that irresponsible "retail therapy" is far more prevalent in one gender than the other.

This is why men's clothes cost more - because they know men buy less on the whole, so they just ramp up the prices regardless to screw men over.

I see it in men often. You don't want to know how many graphics cards get bought and never used because the owner just wanted the shiny thing and didn't actually need it. It's always an attempt at filling an unfillable hole. Just skip the middleman and do drugs about it until you can't feel anymore instead of being reckless with lines of credit and buying unnecessary shit. It still won't fill the hole but at least you'll be fucked up, and if you're lucky too fucked up to care.

>What is the worst purchase you made after you made a lot of money?
Bought an expensive car after two years earning $$ as a programmer, in 1997.
In hindsight I should have invested all the money in tech stocks and held since then.

I bought a Porsche Cayman. It wasn't exactly expensive, (£14000) and I do love driving but my circumstances just made it not make sense in the end. First, I bought it whilst married, so it didn't exactly help me get poon. I also didn't drive anywhere except the supermarket and my in-law's house, and both of those places I took the Fabia because I needed the space for luggage/groceries. My wife fell pregnant pretty much straight after I bought it as well, and at that point the writing was on the wall. I probably drove it less than 50 times, I sold it for roughly what I paid for it and didn't do my bollocks as I had it for less than a year. In hindsight it was a dumb purchase and I can't see myself getting a toy like that again until I'm probably 50, at which point cars are going to be pretty gay anyway.

Not sure if this counts because it wasn't a purchase but it did cost me a ton of money: I fucked up my teeth bad. I'm in my early 30s and I've spent thousands after insurance on my teeth. Fillings, extractions, implants, etc. It fucking sucks and my teeth are still literally falling apart (except the implants). I'm probably just going to have everything pulled and replaced at some point. I envy people who have normal teeth and can eat without worry. Brush your teeth kids, and stop drinking the liquid sugar.

Turns out for the demos I make for my clients there's free VSTs by the very same company that do the job pretty much just as well. The instruments are still excellent, but it was a colossal waste of money when the free shit is pretty much just as good kek

Spent $7000 on a guitar (Gibson custom 1959 Les Paul reissue). Basically as close as you can get to buying one in 1959.

Bought online, has an ugly blemish, thought I’d get over it but not over it. Plays decently but not for $7000 (buzzed liked a fucker when I got it, because boomers like to play low action so I fixed that).

Spend more time practicing on my classical guitar (Cordoba C5) which cost me like $400.

An Alfa Romeo Giulia QF. Just over 500bhp. Never had a car beyond 360bhp before (Ronin era Audi S8) and that was quick enough with 4wd.

Turns out that a 190mph rear wheel drive saloon is way too much for UK roads and it would get you past any speed limit effortlessly - it was dangerously deceptively quick.

Sold it after 8 weeks for the 280bhp Veloce which was still fast but lacked the visceral thrill, so sold that after 9 months.

Then bought an Afla SZ, sold that, bought a Lancia Delta integrale, sold that and now back in a 260bhp 4wd Alfa 159 which looks fucking awesome and is plenty fast enough without being ridiculous.

TLDR: cars.
