I bought it because it is cool looking, not really for an investment. The gold I own is not gold backs. I will be buying mostly silver; I want to get to 200oz with some gold purchases in-between.
I do like the gold/silver backs though simply because they are beautiful.

I've been playing a game called Kingdom Come: Deliverance and the economy is interesting.They have their standard game currency (that are supposedly silver coins), but lightweight silver and gold items (silver rings, golden chalices, etc) are always worth hundreds of coins. When I'm selling junk to traders, they tend to run out of game currency to trade me for all the weapons and armor that I'm giving them, so i use the aforementioned lightweight silver/gold items for barter. I sold some of these to them earlier and then I get them back when they don't have enough coin to pay me for the junk I'm giving them and I can always count on selling these silver/gold items to other traders for lots of coins later on. I really enjoy this mixture of currency and silver/gold bartering

I got this issue too, especially with religious medals and pendants, for some reason a good chunk of those aren't marked.
Something peculiar too is i've got complete sets where not all the pieces have hallmarks. It's pretty evident they all are in silver, but somehow here and there the customs forgot to stamp one or two pieces from the set. I've a 25 liquor goblets set + silver platter like this, only 23 have hallmarks. Same for few pocket watches. Did it already happen to you?

It was mostly to tell you the giant flea market i go to is organized by a charity, who collect stuff offered by people all over France in local branchs, and everything sold is used to replenish food banks across the country.
So there is not much haggle possible, since it's ginormous quantities of stuff who is only sold by the weight/unity.
For example all books are at 50c, no matter if it's a 17th c. encyclopedia or a shitty people magazine. Same goes for tableware, it's sold like 2€/kg for metallic ones, 1.50€/kg for dishes, and everything is displayed in big trays, and you pick what you want.

Emmaus (the charity's name) is often used when people die and relatives don't know what to do with all the stuff, and/or don't want to bother with emptying the house before putting it on sale. They simply call a local branch, and a team of volunteers shows up and clean the house ENTIRELY lol. My mom did that after my gramp died for example, it's pretty common.
This is why i believe it's the best kind of place to find sick deals, because it's not "boomers who know what they got", it's literally dead people stuff or richfags giving out to a charity. No way there is not some treasure hidden!

And regarding your question about not all items of the same set having hallmarks I also have encountered this. For some reason only one of 2 earrings in several pairs of karat gold earrings I've found have been hallmarked, and on older pre-1868 American sterling silverware sometimes just a few of a matching batch of spoons or forks will actually be appropriately hallmarked "STERLING" or have the relevant non-standard hallmarks used by that company or in their region. And with stuff like older ~.900 Coin silverware a complete lack of any marks indicating purity or quality of silver was the norm. The lack of purity hallmarks combined with look-alike plated items makes it extra confusing for normoids but a great angle for the more experienced to scoop up deals. We may be doing well but there is always more for us to learn, let's keep sharpening our skills and hoarding those cheapies my fren.

In reality you shouldn't stack if you don't have enough emergency money. Build your emergency fund first, that way you don't have trouble when your washing machine pops or the car needs a costly repair.

If you have 20k and you have monthly expenses of 1k, you should build an emergency fund of 3k, buy 1oz of gold, which means roughly 15%, and invest the rest in assets that have a return and generate cashflow.

I'm watching several promising things including a non-hallmarked early 1800s karat gold pocket-watch accessory which may be a tasty cheapie, but a recent educational loss was a batch of 6 nice old Austrian silver spoons incorrectly listed as silverplate which I thought would fly under the radar and was looking forward to sniping, but evidently a more assertive scrapper contacted the seller and got them to change the auction to a Buy-It-Now for $15+shipping. ~5oz of silver for the price of 1 ugly pleb buffalo round is nothing extraordinary or worth crying about, but it too was a wakeup-call and reminder that I should be more proactive about either submitting a placeholder bid or messaging those ignorant boomoids directly to buy their shinies cheap and early. I haven't done it often but literally every single time I've messaged sellers before to suggest changing their listing to Buy-it-now they have agreed, however this is because I've only made such offers to sellers I had a good "theory of mind" read on based on their writing style and other items being sold and was sure I could successfully manipulate. it's easier than melting and pouring shit, I'll tell ya how to make a decent ring outta just a silver quarter. drill a hole in it the size of the finger, then get a stick of steel round stock the size you want it to end up. put the ring on it, clamp it down, and start slowly heating and then bashing it to form. do this a while till you get a decent ring goin, go to amazon and buy a cheap mandrel and bash the ring tight on that to get to doing your final polishing and stuff. to polish the inside make a sandpaper wrapped bit for your drill press and run it real slow and just sand it out by hand, it's ok if you take too much cause you can always cut it and re attach it together with silver solder but you should try not to. you can do any neat cuts or rough shapes before that polishing. in terms of setting the gem just go buy some sterling gem settings and use silver solder to attach them, you can have a flat spot on the ring ready for that. if all else fails Im sure theres a "silver quarter ring tutorial" online
