with so many companies filing for insolvency, even though interest rates are not high right now if you look at the historically, wouldn't it be better to just let the zombie companies die off at this point? I mean imagine what would happen if we get actually high interest rates instead of moderate/low one we have right now.

2.2% real yield is the highest it's been in over a decade. It's inline with typical yields from the post dotcom era of the early 2000s. This is a guaranteed, ex-inflation yield.
Given modern day GDP growth levels and the high current debt to GDP ratio., it seems unsustainable to service real yields significantly above this point.

In other words, it is starting to look like there's a real possibility of default.

It's money for nothing, and that's the problem. It's not possible. Not in today's world.
I'm not saying a 2.2% return is amazing, but this is coming from our government. It's supposed to be guaranteed.

Think about the impact of servicing a debt load that is locked in at 2.2% ABOVE inflation. Think about what happens when inflation goes higher to compensate all the money printed to service that debt. How are they going to print enough to cover inflation, and then print another 2% on top of that?

It's a debt dilution death spiral, at the national level.

>>>what if I sell OTM calls on my stock, and use the proceeds of those calls to buy puts?
if it moves against me to the downside, then I am protected by the puts that I bought to hedge (google "collar trade")
if the stock rallies very hard, and reaches my OTM call, awesome - my shares get bought at the higher price
>what if price moves against you?
>>>what if I buy LEAPS to gain leveraged exposure to be able to diversify without allocating too large of capital to one single trade?
if the price falls sharply, my losses are limited to just what I paid for the long dated options contract. If I bought shares to cover the same amount of notional value, I would be exposed to even greater losses than what I paid for the contract, as the stock moved against me
>what if price moves against you?
>>>what if I use options to hedge?
if the price falls, my put options protect me and pay me out. if the price rallies, my stock positions gain in value, greater than the premium paid for the protection, since it's being funded by selling calls and are essentially free. if the stock stays flat, then no harm either way - since the protection was free

Also once you have accrued enough you can buy deep and long enough to not be affected by paltry iterations of the structure. But until then you will be heemed out at every opportunity. Us small fish fry fast.
