If I get a masters in mineral resources/mining engineering, will there be demand for analyst roles in the feasibility/pre-feasibility part of mining? Minerals and mines fascinate me a lot as an idea, especially the geological and financial aspect of them. But I don't see myself working underground for more than during my studies. Surely there are some analyst type of office jobs with occasional travelling to mines for guys who have masters in science in mining?

>> No.56128869

>>56128689
i am not sure if there is major demand for analyst roles in the space your after, but i dont see why it wouldnt be a good idea to have that background for other jobs in mining. There are a lot of projects in the planning phase out there, but most are being worked on by consultant firms, not many companies have the cash to keep that sort of staff around all the time.

I feel like I am gonna regret not jumping into GDXU again. Is everyone here also unleveraged or anyone in it with a 2 or 3× ETF? I think there are companies out there that mostly do engineering or feasibility studies or technical reports. Some onsite work is typically included but it's just checking places out and verifying facts, if the information I've read in some of those papers is true. But it's the geologist who does that part not the engie if I understand correctly

the geo team usually does the field work / ground truthing and sampling. The lead geo and his two helpers will do the technical part of the work, writing up assessment work, mapping, deposit shape diagrams etc, while engineers are the ones who use that data to actually plan the mine out.

Just think about everything you do / have done as part of an overall strategy. Wanting to swing trade UUUU for months *and* buy+hold for the squeeze is like wanting to bottom-tick / win at roulette. I personally have held my U stocks since early 2021 with some light profit-taking along the way, and while I'm happy now & up a lot on a huge position, your returns relative to investment size probably beat mine and your annualized returns surely crush mine, 2.5yrs is a long opportunity cost. And it's only obvious in hindsight that this particular pump was gonna be bigger than the handful of others (also, very dependent on which company).

Yes I am leveraged to the hilt. 3xSLV and 3xGDX, but I don't hold any scams- sorry "juniors" so I only deal with ETFs. I also sold my 3xGDX for a profit on the last top for lack of a better word but got back in on the leverage with the last call. My profits will cushion any choppiness we get this time if it's a false move but I'm still holding out for the bigun. Maybe I'll get kicked in the teeth but we'll see. There's no harm in holding unleveraged though and converting it after further confirmation but I'm just greedy.

Hi PAN MAN, out of curiosity, how much reserves of molybdenum does Freeport-McMoran's Henderson Mine have? How many years are left there?

>> No.56139030

>>56138916
i honestly have no idea, but i can have a look! I know of that mine, but i dont have any data on it thats modern. On Freeport's website they say the Henderson Mine has been operating on reduced output since 2015 due to how the market for moly has been fairing. With output reduced, their probably just drawing from stopes setup a number of years ago, meaning limited new development work. Lower output means longer mine life, add on a fairly massive ore body, the mines not going away from lack of resource.

Market conditions could shutter the operation though, moly prices spike and crash, thats killed a number of great mines, such as Endako in my neck of the woods.

don't the Chinese basically have a monopoly on molybdenum anyway? I think I have heard of a few moly mines in Canada that got shut down before they could even begin to produce because the chinks began to flood the market with cheap molybdenum from their own mines. I don't know anything about all the mines in China but it seems like moly is basically a market where they control most of the supply and demand

not quite a monopoly but they buy a lot of it for the steel industry, as well as for a lot of lubrication purposes. Japan buys a lot of it as well for its steel industry as well, but not as much as they did 10 years ago. The markets for moly tanked after the US lowered trade tariffs on a bunch of metal concentrates a long ways back, the market swings wildly now depending on demand. Moly comes from dozens of copper mines as byproduct, so it usually ends up in massive barrel farms until the market demands 50 million pounds out of no where. There are also a few dozen mega scale mines sitting in the ground right now as moly prices are just to low the last few decades to make mining it viable. I know two mountains made of the stuff south of Houston BC, and another up by Kemess, no ones been interested in moly until earlier this year when the markets went nuts, then cooled out again.

Take a look at Northern Dynasty who holds the world's largest copper mine. For years it has been nothing but blue skys working up toward the permitting process, USACE staff made good comments, 1.2bil from Rio Tinto was lined up to fund the mine. Then Biden came in, USACE staff got swapped and delays were made, mine was denied and forced to be sent through an appeal process, it's been hitting legal blocks all of a sudden.

Now, State of Alaska is taking the EPA to supreme court over this mine, it'll be EPA vs Sackett 2.0 because this is over the clean water act, a "private unnamed organization" stepped in to help fund the legal process in exchange for a % of gold and silver, governer Dunleavy is ready to sue the EPA, as well as a legal member from on if he top institutional holders has stepped in to aid the company. college is supposed to teach you how to think, provide a well rounded education, and some focus on a particular field. Lots of professors are not rich and think they are smart. Lots of C level students get rich because the don't wast time and fluff, they go for what makes money. Learning is always good, you can apply the concepts to many fields in mining, or associated with mining (finance, regulation, computer software, chemicals, machinery, repair work for mining equipment, environmental, whatever.). If you are interested in it you will learn more faster. Don't go into debt for it though. If you start the degree constantly be thinking, planning, preparing for what you are going to do after you get the degree. You can change your mind along the way but a least be thinking and preparing for it. I was getting my degree all the old professors told me mining, oil, and diamonds were all dead ends because everything was already found and exploited. Turns out they were laid off and went into teaching. It was the worst advice they gave because I listened and they steered me into a field I never really liked.

Downtown denver has always been infested with homeless and drug users as long as I've been alive. Which is a pretty long time. It was never a safe or nice place to be.

Our mining towns are pretty rough too. Lots of booze and fighting. You might like it. But I'd avoid Denver. I usually do.

I did, but it took a long time. Once in I saw how fucking retarded the "professors" really where and saw the resurgence in drilling and production. Moved up quickly and made good money. Lot of work changing fields. I bought my own books and studied hard after work to learn the engineering and with that how to evaluate companies.

That's impressive. So you became some sort of an analyst working in the pfs team of a mining company/consultancy? How would you say is the career progression in the industry for a fresh masters graduate? I heard there are a lot of boomers retiring as everywhere but only a little new enrolls filling those empty seats so it's bullish right? Also how difficult is it to start your own projects due to all the regulations? Does that even happen like let's say in commercial RE you have development managers who after a decade or so try their own luck does that happen in mining?

Salt is probably better than 75% of the plays dropped here in the last 3 yrs. It's tough to say if the soon to be announced team will be a catalyst and boost sp. I'm guessing a small bump that could be gone a week or 2 later. And it's unknown how fast TPR will create shareholder value, or not. But I think if we wait the excitement will return at some point and we can decide then how much to sell in the next run.

In my opinion it's one of the safest bets out there regarding juniors, just a longer term thing now because the project got delayed, but this has been clear for a while now.
Nothing will happen until they start the mine construction or at least figure out the funding for it, so this is going to do fuckall except maybe bleed until they get things going.
I'm going to multiply my bag if I can. I'd be really happy to see it fall to .50-.80 range before they get anything done.
Of course if and when TPR gets sold or trades, the price will immediately pull multiples so I hope that doesn't happen too quickly.

>So you became some sort of an analyst working in the pfs team of a mining company/consultancy?
I moved into oil/gas when "fracking" was getting big. I had been finding info online and studying and found a government agency was hiring to staff up their program to handle all the permits and regulations. I tested and scored higher than the other inside candidates who were already working there. Once I started I met with project managers from the oil companies who knew nothing about the government regulations and did not care either, also the old experts never seemed to have learned any of the new pressure transient analysis techniques. If they made money they were brilliant, if they lost money it was the government's fault. The real value in working for the government for a while was I got to look through all the files, 100 years of project data, from many, many companies and many locations. I could tell exactly what a company was trying to with their proposal even if they were not clear about it. also, there was a option for companies to request their data be kept confidential for five years while they tested new areas, but I got full access to it. I learned data analytics and how to use SQL and Excel to query large data sets we had and build simple but effect data analysis tools ( I was watching certain business submit fraudulent data to cover their real operations - you learn more about the business from the cheats than from legit operators). I could evaluate quickly new project proposals, approve faster, or point out what needed to be fixed. I moves up quickly to run the whole operation. Other folks before me retired and moved into the private industry at high levels because they understood what it took to make a project work. If you go into consulting you will see, hopefully, many projects from many different companies and this will give you great insight into what works and what does not. - getting error message my post is too long....

I'm simply not chasing green candles. Oil is pulling back before another small rally into resistance and then a bigger pullback where it may then resume the uptrend. Meanwhile Silver is screaming that metals are finding a bottom.

If you're not already holding a green position in energy then you missed the move.

So will this effectively shut down or horribly slow down new mining projects in BC?

>> No.56206677

>>56206628
basically this ruling states that the province should have to give the power of granting mineral / placer tenures (claims) to the bands, or at least give them the option to say yes or no to claim staking. How this will actually work, bands who hate mining / industry will just blanket say "no" to new claims and permits, or even rescind existing claims as they see fit. The bands that like mining will use this to force massive pay outs from people or companies wanting to work in their territory. Junior companies wont be able to pay, but the mega corps will.

I have no idea how this will work, but the province has 18 months to work on a stop gap measure. There will be court battles over this, from explorers / miners and native bands i am sure. Unfortunately, due to this being a supreme court ruling, little can be done. Signing Canada up to UNDRIP was the worst mistake this country ever made.

This will basically mean only those with major money will be allowed to hold or work with mineral rights in BC moving forward. kills off the little guys like me, and most junior mining too, as a lot of the bands dont want them working in their "territory" anyway.

ah that's fair, yes.
but, if it serves the portfolios of people who have more money than you, there will be a whirlwind feedback loop: CCJ buys pounds in spot, funds that own these spot-pounds, especially SPUT, take this cash and sign term contracts with undervalued producers and developers that are about to become producers, equities skyrocket in these companies, URNM appreciates, sprott wins. more pounds off the term market, all other producers quote higher U prices, and now funds have more pricing power because, as you say, spot following term. does CCJ buy pounds in spot again? at some point, no, and it all unwinds.
so it does matter, a lot, because of the funds. without the funds, it would not matter.
