Eventually (if there were any rules) they will need to buy back those shares, preferably at a lower price. Now, if there is an anomalous event and suddenly there are 50 people who want to buy shares, hedgies, who are market makers, must sell them those shares. Then, to give the hedgies the best chance, let’s say those same 50 people want to sell their shares so hedgies buy them back.
