So the average US parking spot is about 180 square feet (9 ft by 20 ft). So that works out to 360 billion square feet of parking space in the US, or about 8.2 million acres. The land area of the US is about 2.2 billion acres. So that means parking spaces use up 0.37% of the US land area. Seems like an odd thing to worry about, personally.

Parking lots are a disgusting blight on this country though. Everywhere you look there's a building surrounded by a parking lot 5 times as big as the building itself. It's most likely state governments' faults. Someone made up some bullshit regulation about how many parking spots you need for a commercial building. They fucked up the numbers and overestimated and now we have 9 parking spots for every car. It's fucking stupid. Everything was a mistake.
