I could definitely see how tokenized stocks could become a thing.
Imagine a company similar in construct to stable coins, that issues tokenized stocks that are 1:1 backed by real stocks.
You could trade these stocks outside the opening hours of the stockmarket, these instances where something happens in the weekend, or news surface when the market is closed, and then on opening it drops or spike like there is no tomorrow.
Surely it would have value to be able to trade these stocks 24/7?
I'm not that familiar with the after-hours market that currently exist, what kind of derivates it is, the volume is always low so it doesn't seems like a lot of people have faith in that market.

Ok biz, I'll give you a primer on RWAs.

RWA stands for Real World Assets, which can range from basic stuff like dollars in a bank account (think of stuff like USDC) to stuff like "used cars on the blockchain" (yes, this was actually a thing at one point, it was called DMG).

There are a lot of things like real estate too, certain types of loans to businesses, that people tokenize and you can hold it.

Pretty recently there was a protocol called Goldfinch, which is in the business of loaning money to real world businesses at interest rates so people can earn with their stablecoins. (Recently they gave a loan to a business in Kenya that rented out motorcycles and the business defaulted LOL, yes I am not making this up.)

https://thedefiant.io/goldfinch-writes-down-failed-usd5m-loan-to-kenyan-taxi-financier

The other thing that RWAs do is they can put simple assets like dollars in bank accounts or T-Bills on chain. Which allows you to earn yield or hold dollars. These are much safer than loaning to real businesses in shit hole countries.

Basically I wouldn't want to be involved with most RWAs unless you can ensure they are in a somewhat compliant country that isn't a shit hole.

Some of the protocols that have RWA exposure that is worth betting on:

MakerDAO
Centrifuge

Realistically everything else that is an RWA protocol first carries a lot of risks. There are others that aren't quite as risky, but they aren't really RWA they just have a bit of exposure to it.

Tons of protocols have already tokenized stocks. It isn't that hard to do. These protocols have realized though that there is virtually no demand for this product in crypto as is, it gets very low volume, and it paints a target on your back for the SEC.

There are a lot of tokenized commodities though in crypto too, not high demand but they don't make you run all the regulatory risks.

The legal system and regulations are lagging but it's definitely the future. Real estate is textbook completely illiquid.

Let's imagine that instead of buying a flat to become a landlord you could just buy a token representing 0.1% of a real estate DAO owning 10 000 of them. The moment you need the money you can just liquidate a part of your holdings in a few clicks instead of having to bother with putting the whole thing on the market, finding buyers, dealing with the tenant, notary, etc...

Not even talking about the economy of scale when it comes to insurance fees, maintenance, etc... It's like a condominium but on steroids.
