I personally hated every ff8 character. The limits were gay and the junction system made them all interchangeable. You could make zell the anal fist master
blaster into a mage

The only good limit was selphie for full heal or quistis for mighty guard

Zell isn't boring (Quistis, gay gun guy, Riona, Selphie, all women in FF7), an edgelord who takes himself too seriously (squall, auron, cloud), or massive cringe (Tidus, Vaughan). Zell is fun, doesn't take himself too seriously, and his combos kick ass.
Granted Wakka is okay but he's just a diet Zell, Rikku is cute though.
