Yes. Best to have half of your portfolio in silver, the other half in gold. That way, if one goes up, you buy the cheaper one, if the other goes up, you buy the cheaper one, but keep a preset ratio over years.
I also have other assets that get balanced to it. For example:
70% ETF
18% Bonds

5% Gold
5% Silver

Careful with using historical ratios as a guide.
Silver production has increased immensely since the 1900s, and silver's main use - coins and tableware - has diminished as well. Yes, electronics has offset a lot of the consumption, but not to a point where the old ratios still hold.

I can't speak for others, but I don't look at ratios. As silver is no longer a de facto standard metal for coinage, my reasoning is that its price is basically tied to its value as a commodity and no longer has a direct relationship with gold, which *is* used as money in the sense that countries exchange it in massive quantities as a way to pay debts, accumulate wealth, and give some backing to some currencies.

there was one of pic related from a second hand watch dealer locally a while ago. It's a jumbo size Ebel Tarawa (similar to pic related) with 18k gold and diamonds and ETA movement. It had around 170g of 18k and since the seller didn't understand gold it was selling for $6000 CAD. I would have bought it but I didn't have the cash on me. That's why I try to sell anything I don't personally love so that I have cash ready when the deals are available.

I usually go with mostly Buffalo rounds with the thought “an ounce of silver is an ounce of silver”, but all things being equal I decided to get my first Eagles.
