For small fish like us the best way to derisk is simply to move into cash, we should be in liquid enough markets that we have literally no price impact vs an institution like Jane Street could cause the market to shit itself if they tried the same, so they have to get cute and buy put options or something to hedge their deltas without experiencing quite as much price impact.

there's always price impact, just a question of how much. Also I suppose it depends on what exactly you want to hedge, options are very flexible in terms of the payout structures you can create so they can be used to construct positions which hedge against any possible outcome. Maybe you just want to hedge the tail? Maybe just a range? And since they are inherently leveraged the liquidity available is also multiplied. The cost is that, well, leverage has funding fees. So unless you have a true +EV outlook on the future, those fees will cost you more money than the eventual payout.

>Bill Ackman loudly bet on rising yields last week but it's not going his way as real money demand continues to build on an expected peak in Fed funds.
>So the headline from the sale will be that the US paid the most in years for debt but the real story may be that it pays less than feared.
>"We expect there will be solid dip-buying interest for 4-handle 30s at a time when the inflation data is more consistently conforming with the Fed’s objectives," BMO writes.
>Importantly, the last time the US sold 30s above 4%, the market was expecting 4.113% and it came in at 4.080% in a huge surprise and the biggest stop through in a decade
>One caveat though: This is new issue bond and BMO notes that they've tailed in 13 of the past 17 auctions by an average of 1.6 bps. August is also seasonally negative for auctions with 10 of the past 14 tailing. Moreover the size of the auction is up to $23 billion compared to $21 billion last November and this is the first sale since Moody's downgrade.

>inb4 if you want money just sell your stake in the company!
When a company issues a dividend, the share price drops. Why? They are literally distributing (i.e. selling) equity value and giving it to you. That's what a dividend is, a forced sale of equity value. You keep your share of the company, but now it's worth less because the company forcibly distributed a portion of its cash holdings - their asset base shrinks, meaning all things equal, equity drops.

>It’s why most people buy them
If the company was growing at the same rate they issued dividends (aka barely at all), the equity value would move sideways like picrel (VZ). If instead the company pays dividends considerably less than their growth rate (i.e. MCD), and uses the majority of their excess earnings to invest in the company or otherwise perform share buybacks, well... clearly that's a better outcome. They can raise dividends faster over time as well. If you take all the dividend earnings of VZ over this same period, take out taxes and compound them, the performance will still be pathetic compared to MCD, even though VZ had a considerably higher dividend yield. And why? Because MCD had more growth in equity value. Whether that equity value is reflected in the stock price through internal investment causing compounding earnings, share buybacks, or issuing dividends is irrelevant (except when it comes to tax liability for the owner of those shares) - what matters, at the end of the day, is equity value, and the thing that produces the most equity value over time is GROWTH.

sorry for the soapbox polemic but... chasing dividends for dividends sake is a trap.

I am certainly no biz guru like yourself, but I was under the impression the value of a stock decreases according to the dividend distribution purely to prevent or perhaps because of people scalping a dividend by purchasing just prior to record date and selling just after. It is like if the stock price stayed the same you could earn a quick buck by owning a stock for like a day or something. idk the mechanism of the pricing change, but I assume it is not a purely market force driven pricing adjustment.

All my married friends dont seem all that happy to be honest, half are in it just for the sake of being in a relationship because their normies who require frequent social interaction, the other half have kids and the next 20 years of their lives have been set to automatic-pilot, and I hope their wives dont get bored and ditch them to "find themselves" halfway through the kids growing up.

It's just a stepwise function which triggers on the ex-date. Company has x amount of dollars and is going to pay y amount on ex-date. Before ex-date they still have x dollars. After ex-date they have x-y dollars (the y dollars are taken off their balance sheet and set into a separate account for distribution), and that gets immediately reflected in the marketable equity value, all things being equal. Up to the ex-date, technically, the company still owns that capital and can do whatever the fuck they want with it, so it still has value until they no longer have access to it.

My Dad bought a 2014 Ford Focus SE a couple of years ago for $6k for me. It ran well and was at 99k miles. My Dad didn't know of any issues with this car because he bought it at an auction, and when examining it in the lot, it ran fine. We looked up warranties with this car and found a transmission replacement, which I did before it hit 100k miles. Fast forward to 120k miles, and it had issues shifting at low speeds. Took it to one dealership, and when diagnosing, they said I would have to pay an additional amount from the base price because they need to get past my headlight assembly to scan something. Told them to piss off and took my car, having to pay them about $120 for doing fuck all because I wasn't going to pay extra. Took it to another dealership, which didn't charge extra, funny enough, and they said the problem was an electric cable rubbing against an engine part, cutting into the wire. To replace it, they said it would cost $600. My Dad told them we didn't have the money for it, and the guy did the job for free. Yes, free. It was running good, but now around 130k miles, the same issue has occurred, but the car also shutters. I decided to get rid of this ticking time bomb, but recently, I got a letter in the mail from Ford letting me know my transmission control module warranty was extended. I decided to go back to the dealership to see if this would fix the new problem. The dealer reaches out to me telling me it isn't, and the issue lies with the clutch, meaning the warranty won't cover it. It's currently in the shop, and it costs $4k to fix it. Mind you, my Dad paid $6k for this back in 2019. Some of the blame lies on my Dad. But he is a boomer that, because he knows his way around cars, I trusted to get me a decent car. Also, Ford is to blame for even making such a shit cat, notorious for having issues and not doing a damn thing about it. I'm looking to buy a Toyota Corolla.
