>actually get more work done, because i don't have to waste 80% on pointless socializing

Better yet if you get a boss that isn't obsessed with tracking you. I see all these tips about how to look like you're always online, but aside from the two hours I'm working, I just keep my phone by me while I sleep, play vidya, shitpost on 4chan, or whatever the hell else I want to do.

The best advice you'll ever see here: do whatever it takes to get a remote job. It's like cheating at life.

I was working full remote for 6 months before covid. Before that it was 3-4 days remote. I do miss the early days where you could get your work done so early and just play games and smoke all day. 15+ min idle timers.

Mainstream wfh ruined so much though. 5 min teams idle. Stupid video chats. For awhile I was using socket extension on my ctrl key and just stay green all day. Clearly wasn't an issue since most of my team got let go and I'm still here lol.

Similar here. All of the full time remote stuff I could get pays only half of what I make currently to spend about 6 hours per week in traffic.

If I can work out a way to do remote from SEA, I'll likely take the plunge in a couple of years anyway, but I've found a surprising amount of employers insist on being US resident and also there's the 12 hour time difference issue.

That's the endgame. I've been doing this several times for months on and off, but with merely 6 hours time diff (EU based job), which is just perfect. But I can see 12 hours working as well. Mouse wiggle at night, fuck brown qts all day.

I can see it working out in my imagination but I can also see them sending me a Teams message at 3am my time wanting to do a spur of the moment chat and then what? Ideally, I get a job where they just want me to process a bunch of data and they don't care where or what time of day I do it, like maybe some mid-level book keeping work. That's the downside, you'd have to pick up the call even if it would be rare. It all depends on your flexibility to make this work.
Avoiding the LARP is hard I imagine. Good luck finding an employer paying you US rates with SEA residency, which would also involve paying taxes overseas and you having some form of valid work visa. Maybe as an external contractor or something.

Folks,

I know I am seeing a lot of back-and-forth on this topic, but I really need to push back and raise some red flags here. Having an on-site office presence is foundational to our ability to drive efficiencies in a corporate landscape. It is in our DNA. Sure, there is no 'one size fits all' or silver bullet and some are just boilerplate solutions, leveraged to the hilt and really only keeping us at a 30,000-foot-view of things. Being on-site, however, really allow us to get better granularity, find better directional-indicators, or loop back and dive deep into some critical issues on a go-forward basis.

I think if you all start spending more time in the office gain, you'll find yourself trending toward the positive, but you'll have to keep an eye on the puck. Gut through it, reduce thrash, and let's stay in lock-step on this. Yes, we will synergize!

What's the root cause of the hatred of Corporate office spaces? I'll put my layman's hat on and guess that it comes from movies such as Office Space and Dilbert cartoons. But we all know that these are fictional spaces, and real office spaces allow us to touch base in a much more efficient manner.

I have to time-box this comment, as I have a hard-stop in a moment when I will have to jump onto a call. So, just one more point that I want to cover-off on: let's socialize the idea of having more office presence and loop back to see whether we're being more impactful. From a management standpoint, I think that we can get the traction to do it.

So, net/net, ignore the naysayers, sidebar the folks that are stuck in the weeds, and don't waste cycles or bandwidth on folks that don't align strongly with this mission. Try it out, and we'll have another touch point in a little while to see if we've moved the needle. Remember, our north star hasn't changed. We're still championing our core values remotely and we will only do it better in person.

If you need me, I will be online again in a bit.

I have an L-shaped desk with my work computer on one side and my own computer on the other side so if I get an urgent message or email (happens maybe every other day) I can respond quickly. If people bothered me all the time I'd set my status as busy for chunks of the day. I let my status go to away for about an hour each day when I'm eating lunch or going to the store or whatever, just in case it would look fishy to IT if somebody was never marked away.

Fortunately executives and upper management at my company aren't too out of touch but I've heard some deranged shit from other companies. I interviewed at a place that explained they use software with your webcam to make sure you are facing your monitor and it sends your manager a report at the end of the day noting all the times you went more than 2 minutes without looking at your monitor or were not seated in front of your monitor. They said you were expected to message your manager for permission to take bathroom breaks or your lunch break. That's a joke for McDonalds, much less a remote position. I used to get a ton of replies to job applications. These days I'm lucky if I get invited to a single interview within a 30 day timespan of applying to jobs. Again, not just remote, but any job at all.

I think I cracked the code. Get in good with a local company, work there for a while to put some experience on your resume that says "this guy can stick with a job, he's reliable" and then apply to one of the company's business partners or third-party vendors. Preferably one where you have a good working relationship and reputation with some of the partner's employees.
