Is a Financial Engineering or Quantitative Finance Masters worth it.

I hold an undergrad in a quantitative subject with a decent GPA.
I already work a comfy WFH data-analytics finance job and I have a couple years of experience under my belt.

I know programming but only query based languages such as SQL and SAS. I'm currently learning Python at the moment and I'm wiling to learn more if needed.
I'm planning to go to a well respected reputable school but not top 20.

Considering how expensive everything is getting I'm starting to feel if I have no choice.
Is a graduate degree really worth it?

No, market is saturated since regulation killed complex financial product (Basel 3 regulations etc). IB's are dying left and right and the market is being flooded with experienced quants, most recently due to Credit Suisse layoffs.

Much better to go comp sci and specialize in ML and get a comfy AI job paying $200k straight out of school, rather than competing with Quants with 10y+ experience for $120k positions. Many of my colleagues switched from Quant to Data Science (pre 2022) or AI (post 2022) due to better jobs / pay. Its mainly a specialization thing, as the base skills are nearly same for both.

Also to add some background. I studied financial math (MSc) at a top school and worked 10 years as a Quant.

Totally regret not having studied comp sci, there are millions of jobs, its super comfy and easy, you can specialize in anything you want from blockchain to AI to front-end. Most Quants are semi-savants with 130 IQ+ that make the job super competitive, while most developers are borderline retarded from my perspective, 80% of my colleagues who left Quant world went on to become devs at Meta/Goog/MSFT and earn 100% more money just by shifting industry.

If it weren't for my love for financial markets and trading I would have changed as well. But I will probably take a sabatical and then learn some smartcontract programming.

I feel its a bit too late to study computer science on my end. I got an Undergraduate on Mathematical Economics with a Statistics minor.

The Uni I'm planning on going offers coursework in Machine learning, Optimization and Computational Statistics.

Is it possible to shift skills with this type of course work?

People discouraged me in 2013 going into (smartphone) app development saying "Apps are over." Fuck this shit. Its never too late for comp sci.

Yeah thats fine for the math part. Just make sure you acquire some proper software dev skills as well, if necessary even without getting credits for that.

I'll have you know they are 100% worth it, and in fact they are our greatest ally.

depends what you wanna do.
Honestly I look at the guys who do quant / data analysitcs and they get absolutely ass-raped with work, even the M&A guys have a social life compared to these poor souls.
I'm real comfy in structured finance, I get to work on cool projects while not really doing much besides making my analysts run models and create PPTs for the clients.

Client side also seems fun..man, I just talked with a junior from TotalEnergies last week. Guy is like 24 and working on big ass megaprojects...of course he probably makes half what I make considering he's from France, but hell it looks more fun than banking. Might rind their Houston offices if they have a job for me.

either way, good luck friendo, hope you find what you're lookin for.
