Good luck on the car. I've been noticing people with older cars getting fucked lately with repairs. Either there's something in the gas or mechanics are back to making problems while they fix others to create returning customers.

I manage to live only a two-minute walk away from the incredibly rare honest mechanic so i should be alright. It's really maintenance type of repair, nothing bad. He quoted me at $900 to get my alternator replaced (it's a $450 dollar part in and of itself), the entire engine block had to be removed to do it but he stuck with his quote. It was every last penny of my graduation cash to do it.

Can someone explain premiums and how to calculate them to a newbe? Are premiums different from supplier to supplier?

>> No.55748749

>>55748730
Just know when you found a good deal based on the spot. Why would you pay $3+ over spot when another coin or round would be less? Right now silver eagles are the lowest they've been in like a year but still over spot. Know what you want and what you're willing to pay for it.

>> No.55748763

>>55748730
Premiums is the amount of markup over the scrap value of the metal. You can easily calculate premium by dividing the price of the item over the scrap value of the metal.
Some people also like to bake the cost of shipping and tax into the cost of the item to further drive this point home.
Premiums can vary incredibly between seller to seller. It is very ideal to shop around. It is typically low for gold, higher for silver, and very high for items where collector value is assumed.

>> No.55748764

>>55748730
Premiums are the the added price charged by a vendor above a 'spot' price - the wholesale price for a commodity (such as silver). Many times you'll see a web site advertise a price of "$x.xx above spot". The premium varies by vendor, item, and/or metal (commodity). Even spot price is reported differently on different sites, though only by a relatively small amount. My LCS used Kitco's version as their basis for transactions.

Well let's see:

>$264.47 per 10 troy ounce bar assuming cheapest method of payment
>That's $26.45 per troy ounce of silver
>Spot price is currently $23.56 per troy ounce according to Kitco
>26.45/23.56 = 1.1227
That bar would be 12.27% over spot. That really isn't that bad. But remember to shop around.

This would not be a tough resell but keep in mind that when buying back metals dealers tend to only pay more towards scrap value.

>> No.55748823

>>55748796
I'm also 29 and that mindset is fine, but just know that stacking is mostly just keeping your money in your control while having fun with it. I say buy it if you like it and you're not going to sell it unless you need to.

>$11 millions
Are you really so short-sighted?
Aren't we all stacking because we know fiat currencies are rapidly losing their perceived value in real term?

That's exactly how the government put laws "to punish the richs" into place to be popular among the poors, who then end up bitting them in the ass, while the real richfags don't care because they have armies of lawyers to pilpul their way above the law.

One example : bongs didn't care back in the 90s when big property/selling taxes were put in place for real estate worth north of £500K. Back then the pound was strong, only manors and castles were worth that much.
Fast forward 30 years and now even your shitty, molden wooden shack north of London is worth that much. Not even sure there is any house left worth less than that in the subhurbs...
So the law designed to "punish the rich" ends up punishing the average bong, and everybody hate the previous generation for being so naive.

Slowly but surely, you are being pushed onto the higher taxes bracket, even if your real conditions of living are actually decreasing. That is why all the (((laws))) including hard numbers are always so perfidious.

Putting aside the unlikelihood of a practical room temperature superconductor being ready for actual deployment anytime soon, you are missing the point (or willfully avoiding it).

The highest uses for gold and silver are monetary. Have been since the invention of money. Gold is already in the process of remonetization with central banks and BRICS+ stacking to the rafters. Silver remonetization will be more of a grass roots phenomenon, but is just as likely.

Your superconductor fud goes into the same category as asteroid fud.

If you're looking for quick gains, metals are not a good choice. DCA almost by definition consists of consistent, periodic purchases. If you are lucky enough to have started when prices were low, it's easier to realize gains. If you have the patience to hold off purchases until prices dip, it will help.

I always read about how good it is to have commodities like gold, silver etc and I do think they are useful and I have plenty. But generally speaking, whenever I read about them the biggest fans seem to be people who believe shit is going to hit the fan one day so they fantasize about having big bags of coins and becoming a king during the apocalypse, which just seems stupid to me.

Obviously society isn't going to implode within our lifetimes so I ask, what do you plan on doing with all your investments? Sure gold has a great price right now but let's say 50 years pass and they crash. What's your plan then?

Just as every empire eventually falls, every scam eventually unwinds. The USD is a scam. It was sold to the world as a gold-backed currency, but the irresponsible, immoral, profligate psychopaths in Washington DC could not control themselves and they pulled the rug out. Since then, those same psychopaths and their friends have been riding on the momentum of the USD, as they fleeced the American people and the world with inflation.

Stackers generally believe that the days of the USD and American global bullying and financial dominance is coming to an end and that when the end comes, many people will find that what they thought was their wealth has vanished into the thin air from whence it came.

So the question for the prudent person who sees this as inevitable is "how do I preserve my wealth in the coming storm?" Most asset classes are sitting on a debt bubble that will pop. Banks can only be trusted to watch their own asses and if that means screwing you, better lube up. Precious metals are one of the few places a person can park their wealth and expect it to survive major economic upheaval.

Yes, some folks imagine making a massive profit. And if 90% of the population loses everything but you don't, that is going to look pretty good, even though it will not mean a castle and a harem.

I doubt that most stackers think there will be some kind of global apocalypse. That's just a favorite way of trying to disparage and trivialize people who are taking prudent measures in the face of impending economic hard times.

Gold and silver have been valuable in almost every human civilization on Earth for three thousand years or more. That is not likely to change in my lifetime. If I never need my metals stash to live on, then it will go to my children or grandchildren, or some other deserving person. Or to my favorite escort. But here's where it will not go: the banks or the government.

Correct. Fiat currency always eventually collapses. That creates hard times for people who are not prepared but it doesn't throw the world back to the stone age. People get back up and start producing real goods and services to sell for sound money.

While I agree about the USD, I don't foresee it totally collapsing anytime soon. Not within my lifetime anyway. There's just way too much at stake with it and it's clear the institutions will do everything they can do ensure its heart keeps beating. Even with the pandemic and now the recession, I still don't believe the USD is going to suffer all that much.

Either way it's a good to have and I like gold and metals. It's fun to stack and I love mining. Maybe the day will come I will be glad to have it. If not, I still have gold.

Knowing a system is unstable and knowing exactly when it will fall are two very different things. It's like a spinning top. You know it is going to fall over. You can even see changes in the way it is spinning that show instability but it is still hard to say in advance exactly when it will fall over. The problem is that if you wait until it falls it will be too late to prepare.

The USD still looks fairly stable today, but so did the Soviet Union right up to the point where it collapsed. The USD is a house of cards. When (not if) it finally goes no institution will be able to save it, it will go fast and mighty will be the sound of it hitting the ground.

Sup pmg, I want to start my collection of coins very soon and planning to buy some within the next few weeks. I have lurked here for a while and got a few tips from you guys.

What I am thinking of buying is 1/10 oz of gold (I am aware of the premium) and I really like the Kookaburra one since I am into birds but it seems like no one mentions or collect this coin, will this be a bad purchase?

I will also buy some silver and I will be sure to pick up a couple of Kookaburras.

Thoughts?

I never said anything about the Confederacy. Disliking Hitler doesn't require supporting Stalin. You present a false dichotomy. Destroying the Republic to destroy the Confederacy was a terrible plan, and unnecessary, if you really wanted to preserve freedom. But it was a great plan for consolidating power in a corrupt centralized mega-state, which was the intent and the result.

I'm not going to go into the election rigging, as it is too far off topic, but anyone interested can read "The Real Lincoln" by Dilorenzo.

Bullion (or technically COINS) like ASEs is a special case when it comes to those slabs. They're like Funko Pops for boomers in those slabs.
Typically MS70 slabbed would go for like $70-80 and MS69 or lower is like a $45 fuckup coin. There's money to be made sending ASEs off for grading in hordes if you're into that.

>There's money to be made sending ASEs off for grading in hordes if you're into that.

Yeah but slabbing fees are expensive, you have to be a member which is a big fat cost. The paperwork is also a huge pain in the ass, you have to know everything including market value and expected grade range. The people that do it slab like 100 at a time and get bulk discounts.

>> No.55763255

>>55763227
>I saw them in slabs and just wondered if it is a complete waste of money.
It really depends on what you're trying to get graded. My last PCGS run cost probably around $300 between the costs of grading and shipping and fees they like to add.
For an individual coin the grading/slabbing costs $40 alone in most cases but their shipping and fees will be around another $40. I really wouldn't consider grading that's worth under $500.
>one is pristine and you get it put into a slab yourself, you can add value just like that?
Not necessarily. MS70 is like the PERFECT immaculate grade you can get. Most coins fresh from the mint aren't going to be MS70. One single scratch anywhere on the coin would bump it down to MS69.
You can't slab it yourself either if you want anyone to take you seriously. The two graders/slabbers that have a deep base in the numismatic world are PCGS and NGC.
PCGS is the prime authority on American coins (including bullion) while NGC works better with world and ancient coins.
Again grading is an expensive task that is vain in most cases.

That's suicide, everybody is just going to think the coin itself is fake too with a slab obviously trying to emulate a legit slabbing company. Just throw your eagle in an air-tite or keep it in the mint tube if you don't want it graded proper. Alternatively, since CAC is trying to get in the grading game proper maybe they're willing to undercut NGC and PCGS in pricing, and would be a more affordable option for Eagles.
Also, Aliexpress as a domain should just be blacklisted from /pmg/ entirely considering how much fake/deceptive bullion they're responsible for.

To calculate Premium:

((Price of Item)/(Ounces weight) - (spot price))/(spot price)*100

Basically the premium is however much over spot price you’re paying for a given item.

>>55748826

Something to factor as well Anon is the nature of the item.

Premium generally corresponds to this.

Ie. the fancier (and smaller) the format, generally higher the premium.

For instance an official coin, produced and backed by a national mint (ex. American silver eagle), will command a higher premium than a generic silver round.

This has been true throughout history and is the reason why coins were developed in the first place; they are pre-weighted amounts of a metal, in a convenient format and stamped with the official seal of government. Ie. the govt decrees that this here is one ounce of pure silver.

As such they will be trusted by people more - more likely to be exchanged and for a higher value. Then, say an undifferentiated lump of metal (which is what humans used before coins).

The trick is to try and find the best items for the lowest premiums. By watching for sales, buying dips and making contacts with vendors and LCS’s.

So regarding your Italian bar. Yes it had a lower premium. But it also would be seen as less attractive by the average buyer, when you go to resell. It’s all a balancing act.

>Cleaning old coins might seem like a good way to revitalise the appearance of a treasured item, but could in fact reduce a coin's value significantly, and should be avoided. Particularly in the case of old precious metal coins, cleaning them is most definitely not recommended! Many British coins, especially those from 1946 and earlier, could contain silver, and in some cases perhaps gold. Cleaning old coins from before WWII then should be carefully considered first, and time should be taken to identify the coin, so you can be sure what metal(s) it contains.

gold or silver anons?

>Gold and silver are both precious metals valued for their beauty and rarity, but they have distinct characteristics that appeal to different tastes. Some people may prefer the warm, rich, and lustrous appearance of gold, while others might appreciate the cool, shiny, and versatile nature of silver.

>In various cultures, gold has historically been associated with wealth, luxury, and status, making it a symbol of opulence. On the other hand, silver is often connected to elegance, modernity, and a more understated beauty.

nobody really knows

I think gen y/z will buy the dips, maybe underperform for a decade but ultimately come out okay in the long run

I think in the global view, the 3rd world will keep holding the bag for 1st world excesses/degeneracy until all the whites are gone or we have a nuclear war

This, diversification is the key.
I can save 1800€ a month. I buy ETF for 450€ every two weeks and 1 oz of gold every two month.

Sadly i can't automate the gold buying. I said it before, i say it again. Once someone comes up with a gold savings plan, where you get the gold delivered to your home, i'll be on it. Depending on the delivery method i would be willed to pay 2% for the service on top of the regular premiums.

As for bitcoin, thanks, but it's speculation, i just want to store value.
