As a noon who never shorted, what are the tax rules when shorting?
To my understand shorting means I borrow shares and sell, then at a later point i buy the same shares and give back.

When I sell the borrowed shares are there any taxation applied?

I understand any gains will be taxed, but what about the sell action itself?

Pro question: what if I short mlp, will the sale also trigger any special tax rules, such as foreign withholding tax etc?

>Kids are back and forth every week, and ex-husband's child support payments are about what I pay in rent, so I can basically stay here indefinitely since I offset his bill

>Mom is getting tired of it, since the kids always end up making her sick, and sister needs to move out
>Sister's current partner is building a house but it isn't ready until the spring, and I get the slightest sense of cold feet from him

She's not great with money and likes to be social and have branded shit, instead of being utilitarian. But at the same time, she's family and I would want help if I was in the same situation. What can I do to protect myself, but still help out?

Yes & No. Oil is one type of base-load power. But it is near exclusively used for transportation energy and heavy machinery (gasoline & diesel). EVs are like 5% of commuter vehicles in the US.

Natural Gas is more exclusive towards baseload electricity generation and largely a byproduct of oil extraction, which is why they -tend- to move together but not always.

Oil being used for transportation and a plastics input is why it's more economic activity oriented than nat gas, which cares more about weather fluctuations for power usage. In general, humans exist to consoom energy. Lack of consooming and making consoomables depresses energy prices.

What country are you in? In Canada right now you can get ~4-5% relatively risk free. There's a bank that gives 4% on a cash account (not savings, so no transaction restrictions), and there's also HISA ETFs that basically put your money in bank savings accounts and you get a good rate. I use Vanguard, and it doesn't have trailing stops, or live data feeds, or let me buy leveraged ETFs, and options are kind of expensive (1 cent per share or 1$ per contract. And it isn't exceptional for bragging online about your cool gains as they fuck up their portfolio performance charts a bit. And no charting tools. But honestly I feel like these restraints have saved my ass when I was getting fomo-y as I am forced to practice some manner of risk management. One day I will move on from this though.

No. Stick with just an S&P 500 fund or a target fund (make sure the date matches the date you plan to retire). The important things are this; S&P your looking at 10% gains a year avg over the lifetime your invested. The Target fund your looking at 6%. So whichever you plan on doing you need to figure up how much money you need in retirement then scale your contributions to make it happen. Then as you get raises, jack your contributions. Even 5% adds up. Don't just put in the bare minimum the company requires. (Some it's as little as 50 a check). You'll only fuck yourself. Sure that'll add up but it'll be nowhere near enough when retirement comes.

Also new laws on 401ks mean you can let them grow before you have to take out any money at 75. So say you retire at 54. Your contributions stop then but since you've got other income sources you don't need to tap that 401 till your 75. From 54 to 75 that money is earning 10% more a year. Then at 75 you take your RMD. You don't need all that money. Your brokerage account is waiting. Divvy stocks (or an S&P fund) is a perfect way to blow your excess green. Keep in mind from 54 to 75 your still living the good retired life. 75 till your dead that only gets better (more green).

Is there a dummy's guide to doing financial analysis on whether or not to invest in a company that's in the pure research phase with no revenue? I found a company in med tech that is building a surgical robot. They have zero revenue and are purely in R&D + "get FDA approval" mode right now:
>https://investor.vicarioussurgical.com/news/news-details/2023/Vicarious-Surgical-Reports-Second-Quarter-2023-Financial-Results-and-Announces-Clinical-Plan-and-Regulatory-Intent/default.aspx

The share price seems quite low, and I don't know why it hella crashed in 2022. It seems like their system is novel in that it is appreciably smaller (10-15mm entry incision vs 25mm) than competing robots and has more DOF for movement inside the patient. It is also said to be much cheaper than competing systems... having trouble finding more information.

Either way they claim to expect an actual patient trial in mid 2024, and $1B/yr rev. by 2027. So if I pick up some cheapies ($1.64 / share rn) what are my risks?

It depends on what it is. If the drug is for some super deadly thing and it passes all the trials and FDA then you can be a rich fuck from it cause that company can basically charge whatever they want for it. More likely though by the time the trial gets to stage 3 or passes FDA Big Pharma will have bought the company. Same outcome though; your sitting on a fat wad. The downside; getting a drug to stage 3 and beyond is a long waiting game. A costly game at that. Reverse splits, offerings, insane stock price swings all happen during this period. The company dying is also a risk cause these drug trials/experiments cost a shat load.

you can't get a read on it by comparing now to the mountain it just came down from this last Winter, but you need to learn a lot regarding the seasonal cycle (including injection season, heating season, summer ac driving powerburn season, etc) and a plethora of other shit including the curve of the futures contract quotes spanning the months ahead, and EIA projections, to start seeing the long expectation. You have to work it on all the dips and rips, building the position over time, knowing what the exit target is (mine is Oct when BOIL is on the Jan contract, which is the projected Winter peak), and watching it daily to learn its behavior/habits, ranges, etc. Or you can just take the easy, far less profitable route of maybe buying around $60 and selling around $67 or so (figures will change as the season progresses, and watch out for the contract roll 2nd week of Aug).

You'd think you'd be sitting on a fat wad and the company would be on smooth sailing. Nope. They fucked it all up. They rejected Big Pharma. No surprise later Big Pharma struck back. After all they couldn't let the upstart company take away profit from them now could they? So now the ARMN company is circling the drain and the stock is in the deep shat. Moral of story; Get your wad (I did) and bail if the company's board doesn't take the suitcases stuffed with money Big Pharma hands out.

but doing some more research i become more skeptical. theres an ex sr.eng who worked there taht says the company is going to run out of money before they get FDA approval, and that they are woefully unprepared / not even close in terms of design for actually getting to the stage where they can sell these to hospitals.

will just add to my watchlist and do some research if something changes (ie, more evidence to support FDA approval with fast timeline, big cash injection from somewhere) but right now i think ill hold off.

You know I've never understood why these ETFs exist. I can see why leveraged ETFs exist those are cool because you still have leverage but not the theta decay of long options, but how do covered call/synthetic cover call etfs keep their price from getting obliterated long-term? At least when you run traditional covered calls you can bag hold until the stock recovers but if you're continuously selling calls you're going to lock in any losses as your short call will cap any recovery made by the underlying. I suppose a short put strategy would be slightly better but if you're continuously selling puts you're still going to piss away capital if the stock goes on a long-term decline.

Well, BOIL is easily the favorite, but KOLD is seriously kick ass. When BOIL rips beddy gud I start buying KOLD and then sell the KOLD on the next decent BOIL dip. After the Oct (Jan contract for BOIL) peak I'll start slowly flippin' that script and working more into a KOLD bias as it rides back down into the Spring/early Summer trough, and will buy BOIL on KOLD dips and sell it on KOLD rips. Right now my primary mode is *buying BOIL* as cheaply as possible on any good enough dips, and absolutely do not want to sell any BOIL until Oct. I also more casually buy UNG on BOIL dips and am willing to sell it on decent enough rips. Let me know if you need clarification on any of this, it might seem a little complex but it's actually very simple once you can see the mechanics between the 3.

I should add, I'm not, nor do I personally recommend the "all in" at one price point type on this. I start my seed smallish and add to it conservatively as I see what medium short term ranges it's moving within. If you go in too heavy at one price point, unless it's a really good low one then you're definitely going to see some bag holding that you have to not panic from (assuming you know you're in a place in the cycle that it's going to recover and go up further from). ALWAYS KEEP SOME FREE CAPITAL FOR AVERAGING DOWN ON DIPPARINOS. Unless of course you fully understand the risks, and have a reasonable grasp of the price you're buying at and what you'll likely be able to sell at, then, GODSPEED. I think my long term thesis will outdo most all in plays though, from this point in the cycle onwards.

Went to a restaurant called Maiz. It was super hipster. Like you had to scan qr codes to see the menu. I got the enchilada plate. It was good but wouldn't go out of my way to go there. Don't know why the place gets so much hype. They had a black lives matter sign in the window which was disgusting. Frankly I prefer a place in Adrian called fiesta ranchero. Way better food, bigger portions, and cheaper. It's also ran by authentic illegals which is a nice touch. I'm pretty autistic so I devoured my good in like one and a half minutes and had to sit there awkwardly as everyone else took 20 minutes to finish their food. I just nervously laughed and said I was really hungry, but it's just instinct to try and get away from normalfags as quickly as possible.

Yes and before it was web3, crypto, "creator economy", "internet of things", etc.
Venture Capital exists as a way to misallocate excess capital. Basically transferring money from one pension/wealth fund to another and taking their cut in the middle for doing it.

It's the straw breaking the camel's back type of situation. Normies are absolutely retarded when it comes to debt. Rather than considering the cost of whatever they're buying, they purchase based on if they can afford the minimum interest payments for it instead. Which do you think is more common, normies being prudent and putting their student loan payments into savings this whole time or using their freed buying power to get more shit? The student loan payments will only be a few hundred a month, but that's on top of credit card balances and rates at ath, average car payments skyrocketing, and food and energy being much more expensive than in 2020. Each is individually manageable for most households, but cumulatively can cause real strain on the consumer.

Oh, VERY FUCKING IMPORTANT.
Every other month, starting on the 6th business day of the month (actually starting after hours on the 5th but functionally on the 6h), BOIL rolls contracts, selling the previous, buying the new (as a fund). Right now the whole shit is in a state of CONTANGO, which is essentially the spot prices being lower than the futures prices and all this other shit that makes the contract rolls in and of themselves somewhat bearish for the ETF in and of itself. There tends to be relative DIPPARINOS during the rolls, and so far a tendency to come out of the roll spiking upwards. BUT, all of this effect is also going to be potentially tempered by the macro conditions (including heat waves causing ac usage to spike up powerburn). Next roll is coming up in August where BOIL will roll from the present September contract to the November one. Then, in Oct it will roll to the projected peak of January. Understanding this mechanism is essential to strategy which includes watching for buy points (not necessarily entry, just buy). As for entry, I really just recommend going the fuck ahead. Buy ONE share, TEN shares, whatever, just a small amount, and start adding to it on dips relatively to the size of the dips. To my mind right now, $60 BOIL is the floor that I relate everything to, and $65 is the floor of the second story. Obviously below 60 is the basement, and it's always a blessing when we dip into there.

So then I looked at the conversion between USD and INR and indian rupees have declined in value over the last five years. From a low of 70 INR/USD to the current 80. I'm not sure this is enough to explain the difference though.

Just buy market weight. VT is the easiest you can just ignore it and own fucking everything.
