Many of them were played with, carried around, etc. Cards surviving that + two decades and still in mint condition are extremely low in number. That's why, they are rare, simple as. Meanwhile modern cards are bought by the dozens and never opened or stored in thick protective plastic. Two decades from now you will still have millions on the market in mint condition. In fact, I would argue cards in poor condition would be harder to come by, ironically.
