If you want to eat cheap I recommend fruit and milk diet. Milk is super cheap as usual and plenty nutritious. For fruit buy whatever is in season so you get fresh and cheap produce. You can supplement with other stuff but keep milk & fruit the bulk of your diet. I probably get like 90% of all my calories solely from those two food groups. It's fairly cheap and probably the healthiest diet out there.
