I'm in the uk and I had a couple of unpaid parking fines (private land) that I ignored and the total cost ended up increasing to £2k after about 3/4 years. no. hmrc will just park your self assessment account, add interest and fines and send the occasional letter to where ever they find out you're living (which unless you're totally off grid they will).
in the uk if you're not taxed at source (wagie) and you're not writing everything possible off as a business expense/forming a ltd company and paying yourself dividends you're doing it wrong.

That is true for debt. I defaulted on all my business covid loans which amounted to almost £60k. They tried calling me, emailing me, sending me letters, sent people to knock on my door etc and I just ignored them.
They still try to reach me but the intensity is steadily decreasing.

With that said, I don't think the same is true for taxes because that becomes a criminal matter and HMRC will rape you if you owe them money. They can get your bank account frozen.

I've always paid my taxes, but I know people who have never filed income tax in their entire life, nothing actually happens. In the IRS's own words income tax is voluntary, that is, the opposite of compulsory. No idea about England, but in the USA if you just refuse to pay income tax, it will take 5 years, maybe 10, but they will build a case on you then put you in prison. It won't be a ton of time but you will do a year or two.

The IRS will fight with you if you scam them a little, but if you just completely don't pay they will come after you for jail time.
