Alternatively turn that $1m into three home purchases and collect $3k-6k a month right now. You arent thinking of money correctly. 1 million dollars in your 20s, invested, will compound and grow to ridiculous amounts by your 50s, not even considering dividend payouts if you go that route. Having that much money in the market would mean you could work any shitty, easy job that just covers your bills (go be a barista or something) and have never have to worry about financial security again. hell you could probably retire in your 40s if you put it in the market early enough

portugal has a "passive income" visa that requires you to demonstrate passive income fit to live in the country and cover your expenses

The amount is something like 9500 euros a year. You can get that easily, the cheapest way I can think of would be 5500 shares of qyld, which would currently run you about 9300 dollars.

>"the passive income they quote isn't enough to live in the country"
maybe not in a city, but go give it a try. Even their tourist trap cities are significantly less expensive than most places in teh US.

$1 million is enough to stop working if you live within the means of $1 million. Either live in a trailer in the 1st world, or move to a small house in the 3rd world. If you can spend $100k or less to buy whatever you live in you could conservatively draw $30k a year until the account goes to 0 in about 30 years. If you get a cozy seasonal job you can still soft retire.

Personally I would rather not live like that so unless I make hella bank I will prolly be working until I'm old.

Jesus I was high I did the math super wrong in my head. If you have $1M, spend around $300k on a house outright, with the remaining $700k you can make more than $40k a year minimum for 40 years from a 50/50 bond/equity portfolio and not have a housing expense. That's as conservative as it gets just about. If your risk tolerance allows for it you can push the boundaries to get a cheaper house, higher annual yield (all equities portfolio), or work an extra job. All im saying is if you give me $1M I could find a way to never work again.
