The "academic rigour" is the same thing Jimmy Wales tried to build the first proto Wikipedia with.
They setup a 7 stage review process for new encyclopedia articles, to make sure they were good quality.
It didn't work. Their first article that got posted after passing review had to pulled immediately due to plagiarism and glaring errors that the community pointed out.
Here is on podcast explaining why the academia approach sucks and fails. Jimmy had to restart Wikipedia in a more open way.

The chain stopped producing blocks for almost half an hour on april 16, 2021, halting all transactions. The cause has never been determined and is likely to occur again if the network actually had any volume

Cardanos development seems pretty directionless to me.

The main chain can't scale, developers embark on a horrendously complex layer 2 fix called hydra, but can only provide scaling under very specific circumstances.

Smart contracts are a dumpster fire, IOHK spins out a bunch of new companies to build side chains to "scale" smart contracts, but no one knows what security assurances these side chains have.

They're marketing side chains as rollups but I honestly have no idea how much security the side chains inherit from the main chain or how they validate themselves.

Cardano doesn't seem to have any functional products, doesn't seem capable of hosting enterprise solutions, doesn't even seem stable enough for retail defi applications. Virtually every third party developer building on cardano seems to have silently fizzled out.

So effectively cardano seems to be bending itself into another poor man's polkadot, just like ethereum and cosmos, but without any applications or utility. Grim all round.

blockchain always was just bitcoin's implementation detail, only useful and necessary when the entries in the ledger themselves are the value being transferred. all other uses are simply trying to ride bitcoin's financial success into fields where blockchain isn't necessary or doesn't belong.

you don't need a third party blockchain for tokens, defi, or data storage, only for printing tokens and raising money, to sell the idea that you do to others. long term the idea of multiple blockchains will look a lot like the idea of multiple internets, instead of multiple protocols. long term every single altcoin reaches a point where the final few unknowns are known and its future no longer looks attractive.
