2023 is worse because in 2019 the cycle actually bottomed and stayed shitty while everyone knew the 2020 money printer would happen.
this time around the people who make the market have steadily bled new liquidity with well shilled mini narrative cycles because hyperinflation isn't as sure a bet, and a lot of liquidity shifted to the stonks echo bubble.

>> No.55319065

>>55318470
Much worse. Incomparably worse. The older bear markets had the benefit of being in a space where most projects had the pretense of trying to improve something in earnest. So much of that money moved to literal shitcoins with zero utility in the last bullrun. Now there’s legit SEC cases against exchanges and the economy is in a much worse situation. The entire world hates crypto and no one has any money to ape into anything.
The fact that I didn’t make it last cycle because I roundtripped LINK is started to fucking destroy my mental health. Diversifying into anything else would have made me a multimillionaire at the top and I’d still be a millionaire today. By the time LINK gets its shit together AI will be so advanced that better solutions will exist. Crypto itself is probably fucked after 2025. I’m selling everything at some point between now and then and I pray I make enough to live another 20 years

>> No.55319085

BTC didn't dump as much as in 2018, but I'd say that overall this bear market is definitely worse, especially for altcoiners.

Last bear market most people only lost unrealized gains. In this bear market a LOT of people lost their crypto in the various scams that we had since early 2022 (FTX, Celsius, Bancor, several "hacks" and "exploits").

>> No.55320201

I got a job with an income capable of accumulating after the 2017-18 bull, so I didn't experience the drop aside from watching on the sidelines.
I then accumulated 200 ETH and some other stuff from late 2018-2020 and held until selling 2/3 in summer 2021.

It was MOSTLY comfy, although you still needed the mindset to hold through dumb stuff like the covid crash to $80 ethereum, which I watched live. Holding through shit like that is easy for me

I would say this bear is worse for reasons like
* length of bear
* In 2020, the money printer turning on was obvious, so going all-in on assets was an easy choice. The economy and everything macro seem way shittier now.
* I have the advantage of retrospect. the 2018 bear ended. by late 2019 there was already upside. When the fuck are we going to pump again?
* As >>55319140 mentions, the space now has a "rug at any moment" feel to it.

My pro tip (and I took my own advice) is to sell more than enough to live an enjoyable life through a bear mearket. Part of what has made the time fly is how many filipinas I've coomed in raw since they opened the border.

I agree with this. Overall it seems harder to say what will happen to me. In addition, you had much better projects to discuss and it felt more exciting. There was this feeling of anticipation and exploration brewing. New projects to discuss which would then moon during the bull. As of now, it feels more cumbersome. Nothing new since then, really. Not fun and just like an overdue end credits scene. The focus on people on this board ever since the GME invasion is completely speculative and not about the projects in themselves.

2018-2019 was a true crypto winter. 2022-2023 is not because of defi. That is a double edged sword though. Some got lucky with stuff like tsuka, cult, pepe, 0x0, and others, but many lost a lot on new launches thereby exacerbating the bear market for that individual. 2018 was worse in terms of % drop for btc and eth, and many alts went to zero and never came back. 2022 was worse in terms of overall fud, market sentiment and defi collapse. Now: if you are newer to crypto here is what matters: BUY NEW ALTS FROM 2022 OR LATER. MOST 2017-2021 alts are done forever.

In many ways it still is, but much less so, especially with big institutions outspokenly positive about BTC. People are less surprised by someone investing in BTC. If the FTX scandal happened in 2018, BTC would've gone to $1k, no doubt. The fact it held $15k this cycle should speak to the public's acceptance of crypto. it's so much worse and i've been in it since late 2012. back then you were only into it because you were either buying drugs or believed in the fundamentals. after mt gox it was bad but it felt more like a pause than anything and still would lead to something down the line that would shine and have valid use cases. 2018 was fun but also cringey, 2020 and on made it impossible to talk about crypto without being barraged by memes and doge. this is either the long crash we need to restart crypto as majority of shitcoins are killed or it's the one that will kill crypto in regards to any sort of profitability and show up years later as in-home ledgers made by banks and gov't for quicker basics and nothing else.

I think there were alts like LINK that did well so there was this sense that holding good alts would be a good strategy during the bear. A ton of shitcoins carries over to this bull run so it has become much more speculative. Basically a bunch of people making a deal to pump an obvious meme shitcoin just because and not for its fundamentals? That I don’t remember happening.

Oldfagerino here.

Bought my first coins at around $100 each.

I made about a 500% profit in 2021 and sold all of my crypto in November 2021.

I still haven't bought any more.

Things aren't that bad yet and people still have hope, so that tells you we aren't at the bottom. I also have contacts in the contract verification and testing space that still have work, so the industry work hasn't completely dried up yet. I'll probably buy into Solana starting next year once this whole thing has blown over.

You need to remember it's just a fucking cycle. It gets omegahyped beyond what is reasonably possible. That's when you dump.

You then wait until approximately everyone forgets about it approximately 2 years later and there is no work in the space, that is when you buy in again (into the good stuff, ethereum, solana etc, no meme shit, that comes later). We've only had about 18 months of pain so far. So probably 6 months to go.

2019 felt more unpredictable, BTC had done a 5x off the bottom, alts did more

Nibba if you're in the US, you'll understand they're cutting off all fiat offramps...coming to a Europe near you as well. Crypto headwinds, especially for normies, is enormous.
If you're STILL one of those villagers that are 'in it for the tech' you're terminally lost and beyond redemption.
NOTHING will pop crypto now unless there's free money/stimulus...NOTHING. So why you're buying now, I'll never know, because any sound trader will buy ON THE WAY UP, not 'picking bottoms'. And people are now feeding the stock markets, so utilize that tail wind to make money.
Do us all a favor and watch out for electrical lines, because I see videos of your fellow villagers getting fried all the time.

I’ve been on biz since 2017 so this is my third bear market experience. There’s two reasons why this one is particularly shitty. Firstly, in the most recent bull market we saw so many blatantly shitty meme coins with absolutely 0 utility skyrocket in value. While this was great for people looking to make a quick buck, it really damaged the credibility of cryptocurrency being a serious investment. Secondly, the outlook of the economy as a whole this time around is a lot worse than it was before. The looming recession could extend this bear market for a long ass time.

Maybe I was insulated as a young naive student, but 2018 was comfy.

Right now the entire world seems to be on fire in some way. It's not a normal timeline when Russia moves large nukes around casually.

The kind of financial destruction we've seen from the collapse of luna and the contagion afterwards is measurably larger than any other time in crypto. More people now are utterly distraught after this market than before, and in a more impactful way (way more money was printed than ever before in history, so more money per crypto person)

We also have inflation for the first time in 40 years or so

Just a brutal time. I managed to survive inshallah, but not without lessons

I'm 30. I kept my $250k/year job even after making $800k last bull run, so I don't really budget my expenses in Philippines at all.
Would it really be that useful for *you* to know *my* monthly expenses? That's a honest question. If I know what you're trying to solve, I'll try to help.

If I didn't do international trips, I'd probably be sitting at:
$700 rent + $70 electric+ $10 parking. You could pretty easily go to a different city and pay half as much though.
can eat out for $5/meal if you don't eat total street shit, but I'll spend up to $18 for what I consider a nicer lunch.
can hire a live in helper to do basically everything including have sex for ~$180
High end gym $100/month
Phone can probably be good to go for $30/month
philippines dating app $30/month
motorcycle gas/taxis
$16/month for laundry
I forget what else I spent $ on. I'm bigger on fashion and shopping these days tho

TLDR: My lifestyle including travel, flying girls around, eating out etc is probably $60k/year, but I could bring that down to like $24k if I really had to. I just spent the last month in Japan while my condo in philippines sat empty.
