The point is not only succed or not, it's safe to say that it will not fails totally, the main point is to know that if they fail someone else will succeed.
Have you tried theses stuff have you seen how it is powerful to mess with your brain? And imagine how it would be easier if all your environment were your working tool and not just your computer or phone. There is already planty of room beeing builded to allows people from all around the world to play fps in the same space in VR.
What seems sure for me is that there will be plenty of failures because the techological gap between what we can and what is needed to be accepted by everyone is the same between a brick phone and a smartphone. I would cum bucket if Apple would make one of those failure, but it already like a comfy stuff to do in your home. So it's a big step.
But AR developer for ios will be comfy next year.

The heaviest object needs to be placed at the back, below the base of the skull, say the battery. Even if there is no battery the counterweight will make it feel more ergonomic. Your head naturally leans forward because of weight distribution, with a HMD you shouldn't add to the problem.

If you need to have a tether, that's a far better way of distributing the weight. They could have offloaded the battery and computer and speakers to the neck pillow, making the HMD closer to normal glasses.
IMHO the Apple HMD should be just an external display for your phone that maybe has its own 18650 battery at the back as ballast (so it doesn't drain the phone). So you can keep buying new phones but keep the HMD like your old charger.
