Hey guys, I'm currently reading this bullshit:

https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/datasets/daily-treasury-statement/operating-cash-balance

There are reports and I'm trying to figure out what all that means, since I'm no US citizen (EU).
In the June 1st 2023 report,
there is this part in Table IIIA Public Debt Transactions. On the left side under "issues". (sorry it's not easy to copypaste that) My question is simple: The numbers after "Fiscal year to date" mean the money that was acquired through these debt transactions. The highest number BY FAR is with Bills. Does this mean that most of the debt the US has is in Bills or let's say it in another form: Are most people/investors buying bills instead of notes or even bonds?

Marketable:
Bills:
Regular Series Fiscal Year to date: 9,395,649 $
Cash Management Series
Fiscal year to date 673,004 $
Notes Fiscal Year to date: 2,011,626$
Bonds Fiscal Year to date: 300,400 $

Thanks!

It's crazy how oil makes a perfect bottom on the chart, then they announce they're gonna pump it. Still not buying though since it usually shits the bed around this time of year. Intuition tells us that a rapid pump to ruin shorts and then a dump to ruin longs like happened last year is probably the way to go. Then another commodity bullrun to the end of the year.

I’m locked out of my own apartment because they decided to install some trash IoT device for my doorknob called “SmartRent” and the fucker malfunctioned just like you’d expect.

Already talked to my building apartment’s leasing office shits and they contacted maintainence… they haven’t shown up yet and I fucking have shit to do on monday.

They had floated the idea of just breaking the door down, and maintainence hasn’t shown up yet, so I think I’m literally going to have to go buy and axe and do this shit myself.

I’m going to document that the shit’s broken beforehand to cover my ass, and might end up having to buy a new door.
Any thoughts or pro-tips on this dogshit, boys?

You want this page to know the actual breakdown: https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/datasets/monthly-statement-public-debt/summary-of-treasury-securities-outstanding

Essentially bills will show up as "more active" on your page because they have to be reauctioned/rolled over every few months. A longer term note or bond will only show up in that daily treasury statement as an inflow/outflow once every few or several years.

If I remember right, the weighted average maturity for all the debt is somewhere between 3.5 to 5 years.

Don't break down the door they'll probably charge you for it. If you want the full legal eagle approach, you may have the right to hire your own professional and bill them for repairs, (check your state's laws), though that assumes you can find someone available today. Doesn't have futures or index options. No shorting unless you use puts and not everything has options also spreads can be a problem. Very few OTC stocks. No warrants. People complain about fills when it comes to multi-legged option strategies like iron condors and the like. The profit/loss graph for options is also pure dogshit cuz it only shows gain/loss at expiration which is pretty much worthless since most people don't hold to expiration. Also - the most based option in my opinion if you can pull it off and it's legal:
> hire a locksmith for service today
> replace shitty IOT lock with mechanical one
> walk in to the leasing office with a bill and a copy key (the copy key is critical otherwise you are in deep doo doo legally)
> you now have solved the problem permanently and established your dominance over the office, potentially legally (once again, as long as they have a usable key to your apartment)

obviously this is a high risk option. BUT. it will certainly prevent you from getting locked out by flaky IOT garbage again.

Bad idea. The brain shrinks as you get older so you wouldn't be able to keep up with even the most basic material. You'd just slow the rest of the class down and they'd all resent you. Yeah that's an angle I wasn't thinking of but that probably adds an advantage to a 30+ y/o too. The combinations of excessive distractions, worsening curriculum quality due to woke parents, and the outright dopamine barrage zoomers have been exposed to since birth by growing up on smartphones is a pretty big debuff if you ask me. And that's ignoring basically skipping a year (or more) of education due to ""remote learning"" during COVID.

>you make good money on options that haven't even reached their "breakeven"
The breakeven is only relevant on the day of expiration hence the confusion. I'm trying to think of a good way to explain this but in a nutshell, the chart most people look at when they open an option is a graph of what the profit/loss would be at expiration depending on where the price of the underlying ends up. In reality, the profit curve of an option during its lifecycle is actually wildly different and a lot of brokers only show the former while omitting the latter.
For a newfren it's easiest to think of options as just leverage. A call option is similar to buying shares just with more or less leverage depending on strike price and expiration date. The lower the strike price on a call and the further out the expiration date the more the call will move in lockstep with the underlying stock therefore fewer surprises from the other Greeks, especially Vega. My UNH call has a 2025 expiration date for this reason. Since it's a simple call with a long time horizon it's just a way for me to buy UNH with something like 4x leverage. That's as simple as it is. It's profitable because UNH went up since I bought the call three weeks ago on May 18th.
When you get a better understanding of the Greeks, Gamma, Delta, Theta, and Vega in particular you'll be ready to buy options that have a short expiration and options that have a higher strike price. The advantage of these is much higher leverage but the price will be significantly more affected by those Greeks and if you aren't up on exactly how they work it can cause the option to move opposite to your expectations.
>what was your UNH reasoning
Price action. UNH is a monster heavyweight stock that's been going straight up more or less for decades. It's the biggest stock in the Dow and it was on a dip. Plus healthcare does better in challenging economic environments
If you have any more questions fire away I'll do the best I can to answer

ah, ok, fuckin yes. i have paper traded them in HOOD and just couldn't make sense of that aspect but would see it working regardless, but that right there just snaps some things into relative place. what was the market price at the moment you bought that call, what strike price did you select, and how do you go about determining which strike price you are going to choose? and one biggie that has worried me a lot, what's the chance of getting stuck with a contract that you can't sell, either while it is up and you are trying to take profit, or while it is down and you're trying to escape before it potentially gets worse? *very* much appreciated.

>what was the market price, what strike price , and how do you determine which strike?
When I bought the call it cost me $5850 and the strike price is $500. I'm pretty sure UNH shares were going for around $475 at the time. My thesis on UNH was that it's the king shit healthcare stock on a nice dip and I had no doubt it would soon recover. I wanted in with significant leverage which meant options. Because I only wanted leverage and didn't want much exposure to any of the other option Greeks I picked a call option as far out as I could get hence 2025. The further out a call is, the less it is affected by things like volatility (Vega) and time decay (Theta). Normally, to further isolate yourself from the Greeks you go further "in the money" which for calls means a low strike price. Really deep down means a call option with at least a delta of 0.80. The catch is the further in the money you go the leverage starts to decrease. I was really confident in UNH so I was willing to go a bit higher on my strike price but not too high so I picked $500. That strike was above the price of UNH at the time but still lower than where I expect the price of UNH will be when I exit which is $550 so basically split the difference. I didn't want to overshoot my expectations you see.
>what's the chance of getting stuck with a contract that you can't sell, either while it is up and you are trying to take profit, or while it is down and you're trying to escape before it potentially gets worse?
The easiest solution is to only trade options on stocks with lots of volume and open interest. The open interest on my UNH call is 261 which means 261 people are holding that option which is plenty. You can look at the spread between the bid and the ask too. On my option it's about 10% which is fine. If you see an option with zero open interest or a bid/ask spread of 20% or higher avoid it. The fact is though that option market makers will fill your order just not maybe at the best price

Lemme just add I don't usually trade straight up calls since they are vega positive and theta negative. When stocks go up volatility tends to go down which somewhat harms long call options. And the passage of time eats away at call options hence they are theta negative, i.e. "short" theta. When you get experienced with options trading and learn how the greeks work you'll see you can tune an options trade such that each greek either works in your favor or is at worst neutral to your trade. The UNH call was just messing around but I would rarely suggest just yoloing on calls

I find that interesting. the panic and worry over the fed has died down big time but the fed isn't through hiking mostly likely, especially with such strong economic data still coming out. You don't really have to go bananas with leverage in a futures account. You can use 1x, 2x, 3x just like regular ETFs but still get the futures account benefits. Better tax treatment, round the clock trading so if China attacks Taiwan at 2 am you can get out on the spot, you can go short as easily as you can go long, Sunday night trading, direct access to VIX futures so you can take trades that can't be replicated with VIX ETNs like VXX, VIXM, SVXY, etc. And if you do decide to be a degenerate you can get as much leverage as you can practically use, literally over 100x day trading margin

Just being careful. If you have an iron clad exit plan if things go bad and we really do have a recession then UPRO is fine. Otherwise I'd stick with the 2x stuff for now. Backtests show a buy and hold of leveraged ETFs favors 2x over 3x in the long term. Of course 3x outperforms in a full on bull market but is that what we're looking at going forward? Zirp is done, QE is done. Volatility is the enemy of leverage, particularly triple daily rebalance leverage and I anticipate a lot more volatility going forward

I was thinking about this. Have you considered doing the math on the decay factor of the VXX ETN and opening some targeted butterflys for where you expect VXX to be in the future, e.g. pic related? It's fairly predictable in the long term, goes down on average -0.249% per day like clockwork. Butterflys are a very high reward to risk play so you stand to make 3-4x what you open the trade with and risk is defined so no market maker rape

The issue with ITM puts and what makes butterflys better is it's not really a secret that volatility ETNs decay at a predictable rate long term and that's built into the premium of the puts so there's no edge there. The edge is in the precise targeting and that's what the butterflys get you

>> No.55187769

>>55187717
To put a finer point on this, the ITM 33 VXX puts for Sep. 15th cost around 600 to open. That means if you bought them right now VXX would have to drop to 27 before you even start making money. Mathematically you can reasonably expect VXX to be at 25 if everything goes perfectly by Sep 15th. That makes $200 on $600 risked. And that's only if it goes perfectly. The same trade expressed as a butterfly and risking $600 would make $1200 if VXX hits 25 on Sep. 15th

That's at expiration though, if it drops even a little bit before Sept 15th I could still take a profit and not hold to expiration to find out. And correct me if I'm wrong wouldn't the bottom wing of the bufferfly essentially be offset by the short option in the middle and that leaves you with profit only on the upper wing? Why not just load up on those upper wings at that point if you are so sure on direction?

I posted the chart here >>55187584 The turquoise line is showing profit at expiration so you make money if VXX lands anywhere between around 21.50 and 28.25. That's much better than the short put where profit begins at 27. And it isn't reasonable to expect VXX to land lower than 21.50 between now and September since it's subject to the mechanics of the 30 day constant maturity VIX futures roll yield. It's not like SPY where it can just go as low as it wants.
> That's at expiration though, if it drops even a little bit before Sept 15th I could still take a profit and not hold to expiration to find out.
You get the same effect with the butterfly only with better reward to risk. Incidentally I have this exact trade open right now for a few days and it's currently at 15.71% profit. In the time I opened the trade the 30 day contant maturity VIX futures have moved about 8%
Note also that there's a structure called a "broken wing butterfly" that transfers risk from the top wing to the bottom. This is advantageous in the case of VXX since it has a predictable decay. You can set the trade up such that even if VIX pumps to the moon you still profit a little. And if VIX dumps and VXX hits your target you profit a whole lot more. The risk is to the extreme downside which isn't a big concern unless VIX drops to 9 in the next few weeks which ain't gunna happen
