I don't expect hyperinflation. (50% per month) At least not anytime soon. Something fundamental and dramatic would have to change about our monetary system for that to happen. I do expect the current system to not last much longer though. Whatever it gets replaced with will probably be more inclined to inflation.
But, even if the dollar soldiers on somehow, I expect inflation to remain elevated. Even if the Fed somehow met their 2% target, any cash I save today will lose most of its purchasing power by the time I reach, say retirement age. I think its a good idea to safely squirell away some purchasing power to likely be used that far in the future. But at the same time, it is nice to keep it fairly liquid, just in case I need it sooner. With debt instruments being in the biggest bubble of all time, I'm not buying any bonds for long term. The debt bubble has engendered a huge stock market bubble as well, so it seems foolish to try to invest there at the moment. Crypto is way too risky to fulfil this goal. That leaves precious metals as the obvious choice for long term savings, in my opinion.
The other main potential benefit I forsee is the ability to maintain liquid value through massive changes in monetary and currency systems. It seems to me the current global monetary system is rapidly reaching a point where the only options are, at best persistent deleterious inflation, or an uncontrollable and disasterous insolvency and illiquidity crisis. Either one will lead to a new global monetary system sooner or later. it probably and hopefully won't be the proverbial Mad Max scenario, similar to what you describe, but times will probably be tough. It's not a fantasy. I would love it if things could go back to being the way they were just a few years ago, or even just stay as they are now. It just seems unlikely to me, though I hope I'm wrong.

For the first time since the 11110 Executive Order, the demand for silver bullion outpaced the industrial demand in 2022. You answered your first question with the second one. Imagine the amount of silver countries were sitting on after all abandoning silver money around the globe in 1970. Suddently, several millenias worth of coins were pushed out of circulation. Across the world it was hundreds of billions of coins melted down with no immediate use (back in the early 70s the electronic revolution was in it's infancy, solar energy wasn't a thing either, etc..).
This huge amount of silver reserves helped a lot to alleviate all the years of silver deficits. But said reserves are now entirely gone. And this excess silver completely crippled the silver mining industry for over 5 decades, so it will take a long time before restarting it all over.

I saw something interesting recently. While I was at the local coin shop the other day, there was a young-looking Mexican guy selling gold (he looked to be in the 25-35 range). I don't know what kind of gold he was selling, but the owner offered him $125 for it and he was dissatisfied with that offer because he stated that the week prior he was given $150 for the same amount of gold. The owner told him that he doesn't control the price and that gold had been going down.

It was interesting seeing somebody desperate to sell what little gold he could scrounge up for cash. I've actually never seen somebody under the age of 50 selling metals there. Every other patron I've seen in there selling metals are old people. We're totally different people in this thread.
