If you're thinking that long term, definitely check out royalty/streaming majors. Franco-Nevada especially. It's an incredibly profitable business model and these companies get exposure to commodity prices without having to bear any of the costs. Franco-Nevada especially, being essentially the best and most high quality company in the space, have made their investments counter-cyclically and are now just sitting back and letting the cash flow come in. FNV and WPM are both entirely debt free and both have yuge cash positions; very safe to hold and essentially without operating costs. Growth is built in with these royalty companies, but they are not exactly cheap. They're like the Coca-Cola of commodities.

Pipeline companies like TC Energy have great long term track records of dividend growth so do consider those -- high and sustainable divvies. More on oil & gas, if you think oil and gas prices are going to remain elevated (I think they will), many major o&g producers are trading at rather cheap valuations. Exxon, Tourmaline, Arc, CNRL, etc. -- a bit more speculative as the market is afraid of a recession right now but personally I invested in XOM and TOU a while ago. I see North American natgas going up from these lows, and closing the arbitrage with global LNG prices. New export facilities and pipelines coming online mean new demand at higher prices is coming online, this should benefit B.C. and Alberta natty producers especially. Oil inventories remain low and demand remains high despite recession fears. Not necessarily something to keep HODLing for ten or more years, but right now I see NA natty producers and oil producers as a contrarian trade, and not a bad time to enter if you're an energy bull. Uranium majors are also great energy holds: Kazatomprom and Cameco, the former of which is actually very cheap.

Finally, gold miners. Most royalty cos get the gold upside already but the miners are cheap at these gold prices. EDV, GOLD, AEM, BTO, etc.

I will also recommend you to keep an eye on some other big mining companies. Nutrien should be an excellent buy & hold but best wait until fertilizer settles down into a bottom price first -- potash is at about $400-500/t right now, I'd like to see it go to $200-300/t before I buy. Iron ore majors -- RIO, VALE, BHP -- also great and very profitable companies, but again I'd like to see iron ore take a beating first so that I don't buy into a company with diminishing cash flows. Copper producers -- RIO (again), IVN, TECK, etc. -- same here, great companies in this space but in the short term copper could take a beating.

I am a biased commodity bull so do take with a grain of salt. I just see an increasingly energy and materials hungry world where the necessary production is just not there to meet all of the demand coming within the next few decades. I'm rather bullish on metals and energy, I recommend you do your own DD and have your own theses as well.

They are much less risky to hold than mining companies. Miners (especially the shitco juniors) are exposed to a million risks. One of these risks being cost inflation which ended up being a punch in the gut for many mining companies in the past two years. AISC and CAPEX creep has been devastating to some miners! Roylaty companies only take the revenue off the top -- their gross is essentially their net. Royalty companies are much more stable and diversified so they move less both ways, that's true.

But consider also the bigger picture that they do relatively well in a down cycle when miners get absolutely shafted. When the sector gets into liquidation (and it does from time to time because the sector is very cyclical), big royalty companies with their fuckoff balance sheets and no costs can swoop in and buy new royalties at hilarious prices. This is exactly what companies like FNV and OR have done, and they're now just sitting back and enjoying the free ride. That's what makes these companies preferable as a long term or even perpetual hold. The track record does not lie.

As I mentioned previously in another post, I'll be looking to buy base metal and fertilizer producers once commodity prices cool down a bit more over there. The fundamentals will look like shit at the time but that's just the way the cookie crumbles with commodities. You have to be a bit of a contrarian in this sector sometimes. With regards to oil and gas again, I actually bought my positions just about two or three weeks ago. I am seeing so much bearishness on energy right now that I decided to take that position now. TOU also dipped sufficiently, XOM is a bit elevated still technically but they are still raking in good cash flows at current prices, enough to sustain the dividend so I invested there too. To be sure, gold and energy (and related equities) could go down from here but I am comfortable with that since these companies are sufficiently cheap.

As someone whose been poor like 90% of my life I can explain. Generally speaking you're either living with your parents or you have roommates. I lived with 3 friends when I was in my early 20s. We had a blast but as I got older I grew tired of having someone in my space 24/7. You're going to be driving a car that's always staring death in the face at any given moment. The car probably has 180k miles on it or more, bald tires, and neither the AC or the heat works. You live paycheck to paycheck. You're usually literally out of money several days before payday. So there are days where you literally can't even purchase something as trivial as a pop from the gas station because you have no money to your name. Honestly what gets you through is the comradery you build with your similarly poor friends. I made life long friends that I'm still friends with to this day 15 years later from those times. When you have nothing you have to entertain yourself for free, and hanging out with your friends was always free.
