I could homestead and do nothing. Or I can make money and give a better deal than corporations and generally hope to use my means effectively AFTER participating in the system.
Ripple is attempting to offer a "level playing field". This is a gambit that this level playing field, while having downsides that are large, can also be a worthwhile improvement over the current system.
