I am Chinese - american economist and I do forecasting work. Honestly, no one understand what is going on right now. Consumer spending was really strong this quarter, which is surprising given how expensive things are and the fed trying to slow the economy.

Our models are still forecasting three quarters of recession next year, but honestly nothing that is happening now makes any sense. The lockdowns in China has real implications here. OPEC is reducing oil production. Wages aren’t keeping up with inflation. The federal reserve is actively trying to limit employment.

There are undeniably a lot of economic headwinds. If you look at a chart of inflation and recessions, recessions follow just about every period of high inflation - partially because of the actions of the Fed. A lot of economic modeling is extrapolating history into the future, and historically speaking, we should be in a recession next year. Consumer spending in real times is also higher. People are buy more things despite higher prices which is the really confusing part.

Inflation isn’t going down the way the Fed would hope. This means that they are going to have to keep jacking up interest rates. This eventually brings long term investment to a halt (think financing for a new building) and then the jobs to carry out these long term investments (think construction of commercial buildings) go away.

The idea of soft landing look unlikely. That being said, most people are forecasting a shallow recession ending in 2024.... -2.1% in Q3 2023, smaller drop in Q4 and Q1 2024. Growth in Q2 of calendar year 2024.
