Man, I've never seen FUD to the extent that has been happening in /pmg/ threads, lately.

If inflation hits in a big way, a major problem the banks will have is physical coinage being worth far more than the purchasing power of the dollar. I think the covid "coin shortage" was a precursor of the system feeling like it was on its back-foot and wanting to stop giving out the coins incase something bad happened. We have evidence that when under pressure, they defensively limit the metal coinage. Also, given the scarce nature of Zinc, I think it along with all metals will be drastically moving higher whereas currency units will be devalued to eat the losses coming from the bond market. The only circumstance I ever return any coin is if I plan to purchase silver. Otherwise I am content to keep it for long term savings as a defensive hedge against the banks.

I've only ever used "Prospector's Gold and Gems" which is a refinery in Fort Collins, Colorado. They're swamped lately so expect it to take at least a couple months for them to process and return refined bars. They can either subtract their fees from the silver (or gold) you send in or you can arrange to pay them for the refining and manufacturing costs which will be around 15% of the spot value of the batch and depends on spot price, size of the load and type of bars you want made. If you're good at finding cheap scrap sterling it's an awesome way to stack at well under spot price.

I've thought about refiners. Wouldn't a convenient way for them to operate be to just take you silver, measure it, and then send you silver bullion the next day? I doubt many people have some sentimental value about the silver atoms they send in. They just care about receiving the same amount back. Larger refineries may work like that but there are only a couple people working at PG&G, I think the waiting time is more a function of being swamped with a significant backlog of refining consignments and not having enough pure silver on hand any given day to settle everything. I think their daily refining capacity is under 1000oz, maybe under 500.
