Yeah I've been there though not nearly as bad, my situation was losing a good job and having to move back in with my parents. My parents were the only ones who helped me while I was drowning while everyone else, people who I thought I was very close to, blew me off which I will never forget. A "zero sum" system is one where if you remove all the parts it equals zero. An example would be sharing a pizza pie. If I get a slice equalling 51% of the pie, then the maximum you can have is 49%.

There may be non-zero-sum games in the economy but buying a house is rarely one. If you don't already have a house or you need to upsize because you're having children, you're buying out of need, and houses generally go for much more than they're realistically worth. It is similar to trading stocks or crypto, one person is objectively making the better decision. There might be a good reason why one guy is selling a stock that another guy knows is going up (usually information disparity) so both can be acting rationally (acting in their own perceived best interest) but one of them is making the better choice, meaning it is zero or close to zero sum.
