I'm American and the tipping culture has gone insane since COVID. I'm unironically thinking about stopping tipping altogether.

Tipping for a delivery or something feels fine and makes sense, but nowadays they charge you a "delivery fee" which was the whole point of the tip. And then if I go get a coffee or bagel at Starbuck's or one of the places where you wait in line, they'll ask for a tip at the register. I need to stop tipping. It's making every food purchase of mine like 20% more expensive.

In all fairness, it was only 2 generations ago that you were able to see the direct benefits of your taxes. In some areas, you can still see your taxes out to good use. Highways, govt funded science research, public universities, etc, all used to be heavily subsidized by taxes. Which I'm fine with. Tax me as long as I can benefit from them. Long story short there was a social phenomenon here many decades ago of tipping where a wagie would be bestowed a single coin as an "attaboy" for exceptional quality work. It was just a nice thing to do.

But like all American displays of benevolence it became mandatory. Anyone who didn't get a tip thought it was "unfair" despite the fact that it was entirely a customer-based decision. As this became mandatory, bosses recognized this was a great way to artificially cut wages.

This is not how capitalism works. If they can afford to increase prices by 15%, they can and will do so without any increase of costs, like paying people more. They will not increase their own costs for an ethical gain. Unfortunately they will need to be forced since tip culture works in their favor regardless.

If you order food in person via credit card the software prompts you to tip. It usually defaults to 20%, and you have to explicitly change to 0. And this is for to-go fast food you are picking up yourself, not even a sit down restaurant with a waitress. Your entire interaction with the cashier is saying "I am picking up an order for Anon" "that'll be $30" and they expect a fucking $6 tip for dispensing the privilege.

If you order online you are expected to fill in the tip before any food or service is even provided to you.

Sit down restaurants have started adding "service charges" of 10-15% of the bill that's separate from a tip. Sometimes they even add a mandatory 20% gratuity instead (or in addition).
