I'm American and the tipping culture has gone insane since COVID. I'm unironically thinking about stopping tipping altogether.

Tipping for a delivery or something feels fine and makes sense, but nowadays they charge you a "delivery fee" which was the whole point of the tip. And then if I go get a coffee or bagel at Starbuck's or one of the places where you wait in line, they'll ask for a tip at the register. I need to stop tipping. It's making every food purchase of mine like 20% more expensive.

In all fairness, it was only 2 generations ago that you were able to see the direct benefits of your taxes. In some areas, you can still see your taxes out to good use. Highways, govt funded science research, public universities, etc, all used to be heavily subsidized by taxes. Which I'm fine with. Tax me as long as I can benefit from them. Paying state workers $100k a year to fill in a pot hole over the course of 6 months is absolutely not what I am paying my taxes for. Having to pay $25k a year for public university is not what I pay my taxes for.

There is no fairness, we objectively live in a collapsing society comparing the inflation rate of present to the inflation rate of the Roman empire during the crisis of the third century. This has all happened before, was entirely avoidable and only through the cowardice and submission of younger americans who dick each other over in the hope that they can one day be a boomer- the generation that flushed prosperity down the toilet for a lifetime of partying- can such a worthless society be sustained.

well in theory
>small business owners can more easily afford reduced wages
>the wagies are incentivized by tips to provide better service
>resulting in better restaurants, which draw in more customers
>and lower prices for the poor, who aren't expected to leave as large a tip
it's supposed to be a win all around

in practice larger corporations take advantage of a system designed to help bootstrap the small business entrepreneur. but arguably this helps them maintain low prices. people will pay $3 for a burger and leave a 50 cent tip but be unwilling to pay $3.50 for the same burger upfront. or something like that.

additionally these delivery services are blitzscaling. which is a very american practice of operating a business at a loss using vc money long enough to grow a place in the market and then transition into profitability. i imagine tips factor into the viability of that business model. and its very convenient to have these deliveries available and maybe we wouldn't without a corporation blitzscaling and tippmaxxing to make it work.

Long story short there was a social phenomenon here many decades ago of tipping where a wagie would be bestowed a single coin as an "attaboy" for exceptional quality work. It was just a nice thing to do.

But like all American displays of benevolence it became mandatory. Anyone who didn't get a tip thought it was "unfair" despite the fact that it was entirely a customer-based decision. As this became mandatory, bosses recognized this was a great way to artificially cut wages.

Similar to how we would provide emergency aid to countries in times of major distress, a one time delivery of medicine and food quickly turns into also covering all of the military, infrastructure, and educational costs of another nation during peacetime.

American here. I absolutely hate the tipping culture. I am someone that tips 20% on tax as normal and usually more because I understand the industry and I like being nice to people.
The people that think tipping culture is good because they can potentially skirt taxes aren’t very smart.. they lose a lot of other benefits that build up in the long run when it comes to potential compensation.
Service businesses that have common tipping should just increase prices across the board by 15%, pay a living wage and compensation package and make it known tipping is completely unnecessary because the workers are compensated fairly.

This is not how capitalism works. If they can afford to increase prices by 15%, they can and will do so without any increase of costs, like paying people more. They will not increase their own costs for an ethical gain. Unfortunately they will need to be forced since tip culture works in their favor regardless.

It's getting really bad.

If you order food in person via credit card the software prompts you to tip. It usually defaults to 20%, and you have to explicitly change to 0. And this is for to-go fast food you are picking up yourself, not even a sit down restaurant with a waitress. Your entire interaction with the cashier is saying "I am picking up an order for Anon" "that'll be $30" and they expect a fucking $6 tip for dispensing the privilege.

If you order online you are expected to fill in the tip before any food or service is even provided to you.

Sit down restaurants have started adding "service charges" of 10-15% of the bill that's separate from a tip. Sometimes they even add a mandatory 20% gratuity instead (or in addition).

To top it off now there's this bullshit >>54910430
Literally tipping the grocery store for the privilege of buying ingredients to prepare your own meals. Ten years ago this would have been an over the top satirical shitpost mocking American tipping culture, today it's just a sad reality
