Is that what I told her? Why on God's Green Earth wouldn't I tell my mother to set aside a large lump sum windfall instead of spending it, knowing that the market is going to tank soon?
Her income covers her bills and mortgage comfortably, so why should she blow her lump sum payment on 'paying her bills' and 'having cash' when her mortgage payment won't actually go down at all? So the market can bottom out and she won't have any money set aside to "gamble" with when it does?

I posted in the last thread about portfolio allocation. I am in my 20's and save around 80% of my income each paycheck.

How do you anon's plan out your asset allocation? I am attempting to create a plan for my TFSA but I constantly get stuck on what weightings I want for my portfolio. Currently I am sitting 100% in Savings ETFs as I am unsure how things are going to go in the next two quarters.
I was planning on doing an 80%/20% (80% Equity and 20% Fixed Income / Alternative Asset) split.
Obviously I would want exposure to US Equity, Canadian Equity, and Global Equity excluding Canada/US. Fixed Income would be the same in regards to US/Canada/Global exposure.
For alternative assets what are the general thoughts about incorporating precious metal ETF's into my portfolio?
Appreciate any replies, godspeed.

As the resident goyslop stock analyst of /smg/, I was going to visit all of the largest market cap restaurant chains that I've never been to. There are actually a ton of restaurant chains I've never been to since I'm a West Coastoid and the East Coast has a lot more chains, but one of the largest market cap, largest gross revenues chains I haven't been to is Texas Roadhouse. Ticker symbol TXRH. TXRH is a $7.3 billion market cap company.

The closest TXRH to my place is a bit far from me, it's in a completely different city.

It's about noon where I am. Texas Roadhouse closes at 10 PM tonight. I will get an Uber (ticker symbol UBER) to Texas Roadhouse (ticker symbol TXRH) and provide a product analysis, and incorporate that into my equity analysis.

What makes you choose to not make a plan? If it was my margin account I could see messing around with it and trying different things but for my tax free account its all about consistent and safe growth. Planning allows me the best opportunity to achieve this.
I do agree with the idea of staying out until the macro outlook improves. Seems like every company is posting good Q2 reports but is this due to layoffs and fixing their balance sheets? Q3 and Q4 will be the true tell-tails imo.

I'm no perma bear but as long as the yield rate is super inverted (short-term treasuries offering the highest %) you should just keep your inestment money in a 5%+ short-term treasury or money market in the mean time. I'm not telling you for sure the market will crash but you absolutely can't go wrong earning 5% when at least the RISK of a 50% correction is there. Precious Metals are a good 10% if and only if you have a family/ kids/ long-term house to hold them. If you're not in that situation right now they ltierally just weigh you down and are a burdon to think about (since it's a risk to just have so much physical and stealable wealth sitting there and makes it harder for you to plan on moving, traveling). Long-term if your investment horizon is 30+ years than once rates go back down to near 0% just be 100% equity. Maybe 70% USA and 30% China. Just keep it simple. The most important aspect of wealth growth is you don't touch it and let it grow tax-free. Other than during inverse yield curves, bonds are just for super senior citizens who might die any day and need safe income. For young people growth is the #1 concern

I have 2 accounts, taxed and tax advantaged, with significantly different plans.
The tax advantaged one is 50% S&P 50% my own handpicked companies (mostly mid caps in industries that I think will grow in the next 30 years). Until bonds pay a meaningful amount again (LOL never going to happen) it will remain all in on equities as that is my only hope to have enough to retire (also LOL not going to happen).
My taxed account is 50% short term TBills paying 4-5% and 50% companies in industries that I like. I don't like indexfagging as there's a lot of crap companies in there that I hate, so I just buy the ones that I like and cut the trash. If my broker offered shares on intl exchanges I might explore non-US based companies, otherwise I won't buy ADRs.
Neither of these strats are doing well currently, but I am not spooked enough to attempt something different.

I do agree there is a lot of bloat within the overall index but you will definitely need higher capital requirements to be able to make the fees sensible to trade all those addition companies to form your own mini index.

Almost drowned today at the beach. The water was chest-level but I moved a bit to the side and suddenly I couldn’t plant my feet on the ground anymore. Tried swimming towards shore but it didn’t work and I didn’t find out until after your not supposed to do that.

Started flailing around and decided to just swallow my pride and yell for help. Looked towards the shore and everyone was just lined up recording me on their phones. Eventually lifeguard came and threw me a buoyancy cushion and I got pulled to shore.

The entire time I was humiliated that everyone was recording me and angry and disappointed that I was dying in such a retarded manner. Drowning feels like a pretty manchild way to die especially when you’re not doing watersports.

Thanks for reading my blogpost.

Someone retard check me. Why shouldn't I buy a solar panel setup? It'll cost 20k up front and pay for 45-50k over the life of the panel, with the 30% tax rebate.
If I had a plug in hybrid I'd negate my 40$ a week gas cost. Over the life of the vehicle that's 18k saved on gas, on average. What am I missing?

Read another hentai doujin to pass the time this afternoon. (Hey there was nothing on tv that caught my eye and the next normal book on my list don't come out till end of the month). This one was done by the same dude who did the "my bride is a demon lord" and is set in the same time frame/surroundings. Involves a dude who fucks 3 female vampires (but the vamps are all normal human looking so its not you know gross or nothing). Anyway one girl is a blonde schoolgirl classmate of his, the other is her mother who's also blonde (vamps don't age so yeah) while the 3rd is a brunette classmate who's the cousin of the blonde girl. So they're all fucking like mad and soon the dude ends up having an orgy with all 3. The rub? Well seems doing this uh makes him turn into a vamp as well. Which hey I guess isn't that bad a deal considering he's getting to fuck 3 babes now for life. It's also implied that all 3 want him to knock them up,several times in fact. Also the author dude did the short story where the dude gets to fuck an blonde angel school girl (actual angel with the halo and all) and also a demon/devil girl at the same time. Guess it's a toss up if he's going to heaven or hell?

Why is there an assumption that the stocks of semis will continue to go up? The electronics industry never recovered from its 1980s highs, and there was the assumption in the 1980s that electronics would dominate the economy in the future. Well, they do in a way, if you're just counting the numbers of electronics out there. But, these electronics companies aren't very profitable and their margins are slim, and most electronic companies profits come from things that aren't electronics. A lot of electronics companies are dead. And why? The profit margins got too low because of all the competition. Why won't the same thing happen to semis? Is the barrier to entry just impossible for new companies to break in?

Do you see the profits of the semis monopolies increasing in the future? There's a slow steady rate that they can benefit from production efficiency, but even that doesn't guarantee that production costs will decline as the technology continues to be increasingly difficult to manufacture and labour prices rise. There's a limit to how much they can keep raising the prices to increase their margins. What ways do you see the profits of semis increasing even more than they are now? Is an even greater economy of scale going to send profits soaring?

With a simple basic set up of a pump and a 10 m high water tower you can more than easily store any excess energy. Just use a small scale hydro electric motor to get out the energy. The issue is in building a water tower 10m high. Will probably piss off your neighbours lmao.

Hi everyone,

Leaf here, I just learned that there is a "Witholding tax" on my U.S dividend paying stocks, and its eating up 25% of my dividend payments. I'm investing using a TFSA so I'm not subject to capital gains tax on the Canadian side, I suppose the US does not recognize that and just take their portion? Is it possible to file a tax return on the US to reclaim some portion of the withholding tax?

Any dividend chads in the thread tonight? Please pass some knowledge my way, thanks.

There are an assload of variables and I'm not gonna claim to be familiar with all of them but I'd not take the sales pitch at face value, ever. My rough math is that if we assume the test conditions from this datasheet exist for 5 hours every day and you can store all of that power at 100% efficiency you need like 3,280 square feet of panels to power the average American household for one day.
Happy to be corrected by someone who knows better, the only solar panels I've ever touched are the little palm sized ones you can power LEDs with.

The internet of things dream probably isn't dead yet either. The global population isn't declining yet. I am still relatively bullish on semis long term. Hitting the tech wall at 2 angstroms or whatever will be pretty interesting to watch and see how they meet societies ever growing needs for processing power.

Consider the fact that Apple is a company that sells electronics. Electronics is usually taken to mean the generic low end segments, while electronics that actually matter are given their own categories.

And yes, the barrier to entry for semis is too high, and it's a competitive industry where the world's top companies and governments need the best semiconductors. Datacenters are the foundation of big tech. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Tesla, and Nvidia all live and die on semiconductors. Semiconductor technology isn't remotely close to being "good enough" and won't be in the forseeable future.

>incorporating precious metal ETF's into my portfolio?
ETFs are mostly just paper assets that try to track metals. If something really bad happens they might fail to follow physical or even liquidate themselves while physical rises. Therefore ETFs should be used as trading vehicles you'll get out of when you need to, not as protection against the end of the world. If you want the latter, or you want to buy and hold forever, you'll need physical.

If you do want a trading vehicle you can easily take profits on, ETFs make sense. Watch out for the difference between an ETF and an ETN, since ETNs are at more risk of dying unexpectedly. There are a few ETFs that allow redemptions for physical metal, like PHYS and OUNZ. Even if you don't plan on actually redeeming, the feature is a canary that lets you know it's time to sell if they ever remove the redemption feature. It's also a deterrent against shenanigans like when GLD was storing gold with HSBC, and CNBC went to inspect the gold, held a bar up to the camera, and its serial number was actually owned by a different company that had another gold fund. Search for serial number ZJ6752 for details.

However, GLD has a liquid options market and it can track prices more accurately than PHYS under normal circumstances. The expense ratios vary too: GLD 0.4%, OUNZ 0.25%, GLDM 0.1%. GLDM is the budget version of GLD. The various ETFs also have different tax rules, so check the tax properties before making a big purchase. Silver ETFs are basically the same situations with different names.

There is a strong chance that social security won't exist, or will be reduced significantly, by the time you reach retirement age.
Aside from that, it's less about the retirement itself and more about the taxes. For most people, contributing to a 401k gets the dual benefit of 1) reducing your taxable income, and 2) getting employer matching which is literally free money. How much you contribute is a case-by-case basis (some people like to fully max out their 401k contributions, last I checked it was around 20k/yr) but if you just get the employer match that's usually good enough as a baseline. Usually that's 3%-4% of each paycheck.

There is this interesting notion in healthfag / healthcare-economicsfags groups that the ultimate solution to fatassery is just educating kids on the tremendous benefits of fasting and not ingesting any calories for many hours, perhaps days at a time. The hypothesis for why this obvious solution to fatassery is not propagated by governments or other educational institutions is that it literally does not profit anyone to encourage kids to eat less.

This school of thought corresponds with "Via Negative", which focuses not on our actions, but rather what we do NOT do.

Our public schools literally had (still have?) posters of "Got Milk" and other ag corp shills because there were tons of money flowing in from these milkbreath corporations. On the other hand, who the fuck is going to fund the "Stop Eating All The Time" campaign?

The benefits of caloric deficit are observable in empirical biomedical science, but there's no one who is willing to fund a campaign revolving around the absence of consumption. There are thousands of massive agricultural / consumer staples entities willing to fund campaigns to teach schoolkids about consoooming and eating THEIR food.....but there are NO entities that are going to fund an educational paradigm that gets kids to just eat fucking no food (for a few hours).

But if your healthy then you should get the boot and get a damn job. What they'll do instead of giving the boot is jack the requirements to claim it for the next generation of kids born. ex: Me, (born 1983) I can't get full benefits till I turn 67. We could teach school kids to eat less food. We could teach them that fasting for 16+ hours a few days a week, or even for 48 hours a few times a month is good for you.

We could teach the kids to stop eating TSN frozen chicken. Teach them to stop buying carbs from flour products made by BG.

But that profits no one.

It's sad.

You just need to stop consuming calories. Let your body recharge. But there's no money there.

Instead, our kids will go to schools with Got Milk ™ posters and Welch's 100% Fruit ™ snacks (that are entirely high fructose corn syrup) readily available.

If you look at the food they dispense at schools it is fucking grim.

Kids are asked to choose between eating an orange or a banana or eating fruit gushers or Welch's SyrupSlopBerry ™.

Chocolate Milk with 30 grams of sugar.

There's thousands of "mental health clinics" across America that fast track any dreg that shows up to permanent SSI benefits for life. The doctors from those clinics will tell every SSI judge that the person claiming SSI benefits can't possibly work because of their mental illness.

There's ten of millions of them already and they will vote, and they definitely will vote if SSI is threatening, so I don't see them getting kicked off.

Buy calls or puts (depending on your position) in the opposite direction at slightly higher or lower strike price than current as to lock in your profits, but still benefit you if price moves further in your favor. I'm assuming you know how to do this.

that seems crazy, instead of being a mcwagie like what if ur just part-time or a NEET, seems like a crazy loophole

im actually a leaf but our RRSP works purely on what your income is that year
the loophole people do here is to put all your money into a house or something, and even if you're not actually poor, because your actual income is prob non-existent in retirement, a millionaire would be eligible for low-income benefits
as opposed to if they put all their money into an retirement income fund and paid rent

The tax man could try and pull something like "you would have been in X bracket if you worked more, so we're normalizing to that". I'm not taking that risk. I just assume they're going to pass as much legislation as possible to fuck people over in the next 30 years when I am eligible to retire.

I have such hatred and disdain for niggers. Was in a finance space on twitter and this dumb black bitch barged in and started talking and just made me want to throw my computer out the window. She started talking about how we're running out of money and that's why we have inflation (?) Some people just love to hear themselves talk even if they're completely ignorant in regards to macro. She even had the audacity to say "I'm trying to show y'all how to run your space". I really wish the mods would have just kicked her off but they were just like "uhhhh let's stay on topic, yeah?"

No. The way 401k works is this; your only taxed on your RMD or however much you take out in a given year. The RMD is based on two parts; balance of the 401k and the life expectancy factor. Which thanks to recent law (age 75) your life expectancy factor will be lower and your 401k is given more time to grow.
