I saw my first robot welder in 2003. It was at a Caterpillar subcontractor. The machine was 400% as productive as a man on a single component, and the results were repeatable.
The company had a couple of robots, & several dozens of welders. The robot minder guy was a regular welder, half of his job was making sure the parent materials were extremely clean & precisely formed. He achieved this with a little gang of labourers that we meat monkeys simply didn't need.

Robots are for mass produced fiddly bits that are in batches of millions. Most fabrication is one off, bespoke or small batch so it simply isn't worth dialling in a robot.
Robots won't take over until they're cheaper than a labour pool that hasn't seen a meaningful wage increase since the 70's (I shit you not*) so, they aren't anytime soon

this, i worked as a welder for a while in 2010 or something
we used to get a steady order of jobs to make and repair metal fencing for building sites, a robot could do that as we just tacked the edges
but most of the jobs we did were unique where we went to building sites and fixed some hoisted support beam in the air held by a crane and welded it in. we also fitted customer specified size beams in the ground as the building foundations for corners etc
worked on a US airbase in bongland once placing foundations for a school and we got an all you eat buffet everyday. it was windy and we were working 30 feet in the air, not fun but the food was good
