Her problem is that each job she's applying to has hundreds upon hundreds of applicants. When your competition is that fierce, then your personal portfolio + network (most important factor by far) needs to be legendary. Otherwise, you'll get ignored.

Also, if you don't have much of a network (especially if you have no linkedin+monster+indeed profiles), then you're wasting your time if you're applying to hundreds of jobs. It definitely helps to get someone you know to get you an interview, or get noticed by a recruiter. That's the power of networking.

Needed to get away from that industry. It was an iot company and COVID was starting to shut down factories in China. Was tired of finishing a project only to be told it's delayed because the hardware device is sitting somewhere in a warehouse in China and it'll be ready in two more weeks.

If you work in software there will be bugs that developers refuse to fix because the product managers are pushing them to integrate new functionality to entice new buyers. You'll have users that you'll fantasize about drowning in a bathtub. Executives will think you do nothing until something breaks and then they'll accuse you of doing nothing. It can be pretty thankless, but, if you know your stuff, you'll have the company by the balls and can squeeze more money from them.

Security these days is a flooded market, and I feel like the average wage for security workers will only decline/stagnate as fresh blood enters the market. But networking, database, linux administration, are all strong backgrounds and will afford you greater opportunities.

If you have technical AND people skills, I suggest putting a few years into IT, and then looking into sales engineering/customer success.

I applied to about 200 jobs to get an entry level sales job transitioning out of my industry (food service) into selling to restaurants. This was a year ago so the market has probably gotten shit since then but if you’re job hunting full time and you’ve sent less than 100 applications just do better. It’s a numbers game. The type of automation we have seen up till this point has been purpose specific automation. A really shitty example: if you have a worker pressing a button every 10 seconds the entire day, it makes sense to hire someone to make a robot to press the button intead.

The type of automation we are starting to see now is purpose agnostic automation. In this case, the generalized use case for the automation is understood but the actual application isn't based on encoded repetitive actions, but rather a closed loop of information gathering and decision making, thus allowing for adaptability. This has the potential to automate parts of jobs that weren't possible to automate before and the process is literally just getting started.

I actually work in the automation industry and this shit is cool because it allows us to do things that simple PID controllers couldn't but I realize that this is the end of the line for a lot of professions.
